Young Essential|} Oil Products : Young Living or doTERRA ?

Young Living or doTERRA?
This is one of those big questions out there in the vital oils world.

It makes sense That Many of people are asking this question, because these Two companies own a massive market share in the business.

This post is just one in my hunt for the "best" Essential oils company, and while it is somewhat off the beaten path, it is one I thought that I should write.

Admitting When You Are Mistaken

Before we get into the comparison, let me say that I've had to admit I had been Incorrect about things before. |}

-- My thinking which Lilla have been a waste of money (see my"I was wrong" Lilla Rose review). |}
-- or stating my Natural Dishwasher Rinse Aid was a great idea.

We need to be willing to admit we're wrong.

When I began my journey with essential oils (that I never expected to Go on, by the way--I originally believed that essential oils were a scam), I went with Young Living. Because it worked.

As time wore on, but I was not certain what to think.

Young Living vs. doTERRA {

Remember my passionate posts about their Thieves |}

I had been pretty excited about the results I had, but as I began writing about Essential oils, I began having some second thoughts. Specifically, 1 rep from doTERRA began pointing out a few matters that had me rethinking my choice and wondering when I made the ideal choice or not.

And while I had been doing my investigating, a few different things surfaced up About both Young Living and doTERRA which made me wonder and think much more. About both businesses.

It was hard to sort through all of the information, but I will lay out Most of it for you here so you can see a few of the concerns which came into my attention. This isn't everything that I found to be disconcerting, but it is a lot of it. |}

You have for sure heard"Young Living is the best!" |} Or even"doTERRA is your most Pure".

Or something like this.

I touched on a few of those issues in the beginning of my Best Essential Oils series. But here is more.

Young Living Review 1. Reputation and Ethics -- |}{

First of all, Young Living was pretty much |} The very first on the cube. They made essential oils . There is something to be said for this. |}

But, there are some pretty not-so-savory things online about D. Gary Young. Of course, the net can be full of truths and lies. However, I think these things might be worth paying attention to. |} In fact, this information is a whole lot of what gave me pause when I originally was considering registering with YL. excellent for me personally, but I really did not like what I had been reading. |}

Now, I really do have my worries about Mr. Barrett--largely that he is basically an "anti-alternative therapy" hound. And I like alternative therapies. Most of them, at least.

I personally am very concerned about abuses in the other medical field. But I'm also concerned about abuses in Western medicine. |}

My Loved Ones and I have been harmed by the practices of Classic Western Medicine (overuse of anti-biotics, over-use of prescriptions meds, doctors misdiagnosing acid reflux, etc.). |} Sometimes, we have been cured regardless of what mainstream physicians told us to do.

I know there are abuses on both sides. |} But Quackwatch seems to be just Targeting everything alternative: Chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese medicine....You title it. |} If it's alternative, it is Barrett's target.

I could go on and on about his Website, but suffice it to say That I'm not |} Sure of all of Barrett's accusations from Gary Young. (UPDATE -- All of remarks by Mr. Barrett from Gary Young seem to have been removed so that I can't cite them any longer.)

But, his writings about Young alive and Gary Young leave something to ponder. Moreso in light of everything else I discovered...

I discovered this interesting entry speaking to Young Living OSHA offenses . I didn't find any by another oils companies, although I did not look all of those vital oils companies up, of course. That would take a very long time and I could not locate them all for sure.

Now, Young Living is your earliest oils company, so they've had longer time for There to be offenses, and all of the offenses seem to be of the exact same incident.

Of course, OSHA violations do not indicate that a provider is bad. If they Cleaned up their procedures correctly, then possibly their new procedures are better than ever before.

3. Non-Indigenous Plants --

Many A Fantastic number (updated 4/2015) of Young Living's farms can be found in the U.S. I think that's fine for a business being more"in control" of their product, but not great if you follow traditional wisdom that crops grow best (and have the best therapeutic qualities) when they are grown in their native locations (in which they are supposed to grow naturally).

If you read through the comments of Best Essential Oils Components 3 & 2 , you'll notice that Young Living reps tout the fact that YL farms have been in the U.S. as being an advantage--that it provides Young alive control over the entire procedure. Maybe, but other businesses like doTERRA and most of the other companies I've looked to have their oils sourced from wherever the crops grow naturally for greater quality.

4. What Is That Smell? {

You know I like testing things before recommending them , like in my:|}

Best {Cinnamon Sugar and
Best Eye Makeup Removerarticles. |}

Then you won't be surprised to understand that people did so with essential Oils as well.

I bought Young Living, doTERRA, Mountain Rose Herbs, Aura Cacia, and two |} Other companies' oils and did a bit"Smell Challenge" with my not-so-specially-trained Smell Testing Panel (a.k.a. my family). |}

5. Product Claims

{In the literature which I got from Young alive when I signed up, there were Thieves® brochures. |} The Brochure mentioned this research done that seemingly addressed the superior therapeutic value of the oil.

I hunted up the evaluations online to see what they had been all about, because I was Curious to observe the specific effects and discovered, however, that the analysis was performed on generic Eucalyptus Oil--maybe not on Thieves Oil.

Huh? So it seemed to me that the company was stating that it had been proven Their Thieves® oil was demonstrated to be effective, when what really was that the situation was that Eucalyptus, 1 element of Thieves®, was demonstrated to be effective.

In a sense, that's fine, I guess. But I was confused and chose to email headquarters.

This was their answer:

Thank you for your emailaddress. Regrettably we Can't comment on any

We needed a blind odor test of 3-5 manufacturers of the same oil.

In every case, Young Living has been singled out as with a compound (artificial ) overtone.

Does that mean there were synthetics added?

Not always naturally, but we didn't care for it.

6. Country of Origin

As of the 2018 upgrade of this post, all or many of the oils from Young Living don't have a country of source indicated on the site.

DoTERRA Inspection {

Besides buying the Young Living Starter Kit, |} I also purchased a big kit of doTERRA's oils to try them out from YL. I asked doTERRA reps and company employees heaps of queries, and that I used their oils exclusively for awhile.

1 thing that I really like about doTERRA is their instructional resources -- {And also, their oils smell great. |}

But their great smell a part of what worries me.

1 thing I Truly don't care for is that a Good Deal of doTERRA reps (and Corporate workers too ) say something like,"You'll understand it works by its own odor."

This by doTERRA's website:"A 100% pure therapeutic-grade |} needs to have a balanced, broad fragrance profile and should odor crystal clear ." |} I don't know about you, but I do not understand what"crystal clear" means.

Before I go into more--I said distillation techniques in one of my own Previous posts. Basically, the moving wisdom of essential oils is that you set the plant components and water in a distiller and under low pressure and low temperatures, you distill the vital oils from the plant.

traveling down a tube and into a vat--along with the steam. |} The petroleum Collects along with the water and can be removed and--voila--you've got essential oils.

The most coveted, and many expensive (and regarded as the most Therapeutic) oil is what can be accumulated during the first portion of the distillation interval. The resulting oil is known as"first distilled."

This"first distillation" only applies to ylang ylang and maybe |} Peppermint, according to what I have learned. {

DoTERRA's peppermint scents |} Good enough to eat--as in"candy cane" good. |}

But that might be a problem. Here's why.

Most peppermint essential oils smell like the peppermint you locate growing |} Out in nature. Kind of herby and not really like a candy cane.

Candy-cane-smelling peppermint seems to be according to Several resources, maybe from a redistill. The oils are redistilled or some elements are taken out to give the oil a sterile pepperminty candy odor.

Another alternative is that someone did something else into the peppermint Oil to decrease the herby odor.

just what doTERRA's peppermint oils smell like. |} So yummy, In reality, that in case you have kiddos in the home, you'd best keep it from arm's reach.

Here is the answer I got from doTERRA saying that their peppermint oil is. {a "complete distill":

You can let her know that our Peppermint uses complete
distillation. There is 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and finish and we utilize complete. |} (Source: my email.) |}

So if in fact, the very first distillation of peppermint oil would be the most Valuable, then their peppermint oil might not be top quality.

If there is no such thing as more than 1 preservative of peppermint, As many state, then why's doTERRA saying that there is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and complete purification of peppermint? Maybe it was a mistake.

Please notethis entire subject Is Quite confusing and I am digging into it More and am going to be adding more information for this series about it or addressing it again in another post. It is possible to read some information in later articles about why one chemist believes that doTERRA's peppermint mint smell this manner.

I shall add, however, that the most disconcerting thing to me about the entire Issue was that I could never get good information regarding WHY their peppermint smelled the manner that it did. |}

Report this ad

In 1 movie, one of the creators of doTERRA stated that their peppermint Smelled fantastic because it had been from Washington. {Well, other peppermints are from Washington. |}

Then, while researching the whole thing, someone else from the company said It was because it had been distilled only from the leaves and the blossoms. I could not get a true response on it. I tried for weeks and months. It's a really disconcerting situation when I can't get answers to questions like this.

promoting the top of the line quality. |} Their an entire distillation. |} Some may say that this is an issue of taste, but in the vital oils sector, the very first loaf of ylang ylang is much more appreciated and consequently, a higher priced oil. To their credit, doTERRA will call their ylang ylang a complete distill on their website.

Ylang Ylang first distill (that can be Known as"additional") is generally Considered to be the quality of oil that's most sought after / of highest therapeutic quality--maybe not the comprehensive distillation.

Due to Kitchen Stewardship, I |} Realized that doTERRA does not disclose all of the oils within this bug repellant blend. I will say that we've used this to cure after sting itching (along with my son likes it), however I believe that not adding ingredients on a label is not preferable. (UPDATE -- doTERRA currently exposes the ingredients of their Terra Shield mix. I am glad they are doing this.)

What I believe is troubling here is that doTERRA Produces a lot of claims About their monies being the best--top quality. And their costs sure reflect that. I do not believe I would buy whole, 2nd or 3rd distillation oil for over other organizations are selling 1st distill for--do you?

UPDATE 4/16: I will be upgrading this distillation information.

Of course, there are other things to consider --purity, etc.. So we'll Keep the dialog going and touch on different businesses as well.

If not--request.

Thank you for your patience! |} It was a long road, but I guarantee, we |} Are nearing the end.

This is not always a negative, but thought I must point out it because Frankincense is such a popular essential oil nowadays.

Most companies sell just 1 variety of Frankincense Oil, or several Varieties, however doTERRA's Frankincense is, at least as of the date I am writing this addition to this post (Aug 2016), a mix of different varieties (origin ):

-- carterii (typically the cheapest )
{-- serrata
-- frereana

5. |} No Organic Certification

Among the things that bugs me about doTERRA is that they don't have any certified organic oils. What I have heard is that it is too hard for them to get that certification from all of the states that they source from. Emily Wright states:

The reason for this is because we source from numerous developing countries. The certification requirements and availability differs from country to country. Some states do not even have a certification offering.

I do it. It can be hard. But they could source a few or many of these Organically if they wanted to. I see other companies doing it. Perhaps I am incorrect, but that's the way it seems to me. I've looked into organic certification before and it was not as expensive as most companies (those without certification) make it out to be.

6. Country of Origin

As of the 2018 upgrade of this post, all or many of the oils from doTERRA do Not have a country of source indicated on the site. This can be interesting especially because the organization and/or its representatives repeatedly state that they can't find organic certification because of it being hard to get it in the states where their oils have been sourced.

I heard from a reader that there is source map for doTERRA oils, however I couldn't find it. {I did locate one page that shows sourcing for Spikenard and Petitgrain. |} It demonstrates that the Petitgrain Oil is sourced from Paraguay. Other companies have organic Petitgrain from Paraguay so I would be interested in hearing where their other oils are out to see if their claim about natural being something that they can't do would be not.

Same Source for Oils?

2018 Update: Here's something interesting that just came into my attention. Young alive and doTERRA seem to have exactly the exact same resource for some of their oils.

Examine these sources and see that Bio Young Aromas is your provider To both businesses.

Not certain what to make of this.

There are some other things about those companies and I could not go into all Of these for a variety of reasons.

When I first wrote this series, doTERRA'd Hardly Any oils if you were Looking for a company that could be a 1 stop shop, then it was not a really great option. That's changed somewhat since that time. |}

Both businesses have a large command over the marketplace and there is a lot Of tension between the two. I believe it's hard to say which is best, and obviously different facets of each business continue to alter making them both kind of moving goals.

My goal here was not really to say that of these was greatest, but to talk about Different facets of each of those"crucial oil powerhouses" in the midst of my hunt for the best essential oil business and point out some of my concerns with both of these.

What do you believe?

Do you think you is better than the other or do you rather not work with Either of these?
