Young Essential|} Oil Products : Young Living or doTERRA ?

Young Living or doTERRA?
This is only one of those big questions out there from the essential oils world.

It makes sense that a lot of Individuals are asking this question, since these Two companies own a huge market share in the industry.

This post is one in my search for the "finest" Essential oils firm , and while it is a bit off the beaten path, it is one I thought I should write.

Admitting When You Are Mistaken

Before we get into the comparison, let me say that I have had to admit I was Incorrect about things before. |}

-- My believing which Lilla have been a waste of money (see my"I was wrong" Lilla Rose review). |}
-- or stating my Natural Dishwasher Rinse Aid proved to be a fantastic idea.

We have to be prepared to admit we're wrong.

When I began my trip with essential oils (which I never expected to Proceed, by the way--I initially thought that essential oils turned into a scam), I moved with Young Living. Since it worked.

As time wore on, however, I wasn't certain what to think.

Remember my passionate posts about their Thieves |} and Peppermint and Wintergreen?

I was quite excited about the results I had, but since I started writing about Essential oils, I started having some second thoughts. In particular, 1 rep from doTERRA started pointing out some matters that had me rethinking my decision and wondering if I made the ideal decision or not.

And while I was doing my investigating, some different things surfaced up About both Youthful Living and doTERRA which made me wonder and think even more. About both businesses.

It was hard to sort through all of the information, but I will lay out Most of it for you here so that you can view some of the concerns which came into my attention. is not everything that I found to be disconcerting, but it is a lot of it. |}

Now I will discuss what occurred as I looked to the"heavy hitters" From the crucial Oils Industry--

If you have been searching into essential oils in Any Way, chances are you have come

You've for sure heard"Young Living is the best!" |} Or"doTERRA is the most Pure".

Or something like this.

I touched on some of those issues in the Start of my Best Essential Oils Collection. But here is more.

Young Living Overview 1. Reputation and Ethics -- |}{

First of all, Young Living was fairly much |} The first on the block. They literally made essential oils . There's something to be said for this. |}

However, there are some fairly not-so-savory items on the internet about D. Gary Young. Of course, the net can be full of lies and truths. But I still think these things may be worth paying attention to. |} Dr. Stephen Barrett has written a load of unsavory things about D. Gary Young. In fact, this information is a lot of what gave me pause when I initially was considering registering with YL. excellent for me personally, but I really didn't like what I was reading. |}

READ  Thundershirt For Dogs Separation Anxiety Reviews

Now, I really do have my worries about Mr. Barrett--largely that he's essentially an "anti-alternative treatment" hound. And I like alternative therapies. The majority of them, at the least.

I personally am very concerned about abuses at the other medical field. But I'm also concerned about abuses in Western medicine. |}

My Loved Ones and I have been harmed by the practices of traditional Western Medicine (overuse of anti-biotics, over-use of prescriptions meds, physicians misdiagnosing acid reflux, etc.). |} In some cases, we've been healed regardless of what mainstream physicians told us to perform.

understand there are abuses on both sides. |} However, Quackwatch appears to be just Targeting everything option: Chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese medicine....You title it. |} If it's alternative, it is Barrett's goal.

I really could go on and on about his site, but suffice it to say That I'm not |} Sure of all Barrett's accusations against Gary Young. (UPDATE -- All of comments by Mr. Barrett against Gary Young appear to have been removed so I can not cite them any longer.)

However, his writings about Young alive and Gary Young abandon something to ponder. Moreso in light of what else I discovered...

2. OSHA Violations --

I discovered this interesting entry referring to Young Living OSHA offenses . I didn't discover any by the other oils companies, although I didn't look all of those essential oils companies up, needless to say. This would take a very long long time and I could not locate them all for sure.

Now, Young Living is the earliest oils firm, so they've had more time for There to be violations, and each the violations appear to be of the same incident.

Of course, OSHA violations do not mean that a company is bad. If they Cleaned up their procedures properly, then their new procedures are better than ever.

Many A good amount (updated 4/2015) of Young Living's farms can be found in the U.S. I feel that's fine for a company being more"in control" of their merchandise, but not great if you follow conventional wisdom that crops grow best (and have the best therapeutic qualities) if they are grown in their indigenous locations (where they are supposed to grow naturally).

If you browse through the comments of Best Essential Oils Components 3 & 2 , you'll notice that Young Living repetitions tout the fact that YL farms are from the U.S. as being an advantage--that it gives Young alive control over the whole process. Perhaps, but other companies like doTERRA and most of the other companies I have looked to have their monies sourced from wherever the crops grow naturally for greater quality.

4. What Is That Smell? {

You know I like testing things before recommending them to you, like in my:|}

Best {Cinnamon Sugar and
Best Eye Makeup Removerposts. |}

Then you won't be amazed to know that we did so with essential Oils as well.

I bought Young Living, doTERRA, Mountain Rose Herbs, Aura Cacia, and two |} Other firms' oils also did a bit"Smell Challenge" with my not-so-specially-trained Smell Testing Panel (a.k.a. my household ). |}

5. Product Claims

{From the literature which I obtained from Young alive when I signed up, there were Thieves® brochures. |} The Brochure mentioned this study done that seemingly addressed the exceptional therapeutic value of this oil.

I looked up the evaluations on the Internet to see what they had been all about, because I was Curious to observe the specific effects and discovered, however, that the analysis was performed on generic Eucalyptus Oil--maybe not to Thieves Oil.

Huh? So it appeared to me that the company was stating that it was proven That their Thieves® oil was proven to be effective, when what really was that the situation was that Eucalyptus, 1 component of Thieves®, was proven to be effective.

In a feeling, that is fine, I suppose. However, I still was confused and decided to email headquarters.

This was their response:

items or study which contain useful information concerning essential
nutritional supplements and nutritional supplements and may be able to assist you further. {

We needed a blind odor test of 3-5 brands of the same oil.

In every instance, Young Living has been singled out as having a chemical (synthetic) overtone.

READ  Best Magnesium Supplement For Constipation

Does that mean there were synthetics added?

Not always of course, but we still didn't care for this.

6. Country of Origin

As of this 2018 upgrade of the article, all or Lots of the oils from Young Living don't have a country of origin indicated on the website.

DoTERRA Inspection {

Besides buying the Young Living Starter Kit, |} I also bought a large kit of doTERRA's oils to test them out against YL. I requested doTERRA repetitions and company employees heaps of queries, and I even used their oils exclusively for awhile.

One thing I really like about doTERRA is their instructional tools -- {And also, their oils smell great. |}

However, their great smell a part of what worries me.

One thing I Truly don't care for is that a lot of doTERRA repetitions (and Corporate workers as well) say something like,"You will know it works by its own odor."

This by doTERRA's site:"A 100% pure therapeutic-grade |} Essential oil should have a balanced, broad fragrance profile and ought to odor crystal clear ." |} I really don't know about you, but I do not know what"crystal clean" means.

Before I go into more--I said distillation techniques in one of my own Previous articles. Fundamentally, the going wisdom of essential oils is that you put the plant parts and water at a distiller and under low pressure and low temperatures, you distill the essential oils out of the plant.

traveling down a tube and into a vat--along with the steam. |} The petroleum Collects along with the water and can be removed and--voila--you have essential oils.

The most coveted, and most expensive (and regarded as the most Curative ) oil is that which can be collected during the first part of the distillation interval. The resulting oil is called"first distilled."

This"first distillation" only applies to ylang ylang and maybe |} Peppermint, based on what I've learned. {

DoTERRA's peppermint smells |} great. |}

But that may be a problem. Here's the reason why.

Most peppermint essential oils smell like the peppermint you locate growing |} Outside in character. Kind of herby rather than really like a candy cane.

Candy-cane-smelling peppermint seems to be according to Several resources, maybe out of a redistill. The oils are redistilled or some components are taken out to provide the oil a clean pepperminty candy odor. (Source).

The other alternative is that somebody did something else into the peppermint Oil to decrease the herby odor.

This is exactly what doTERRA's peppermint oils smell like. |} So yummy, In fact, that in case you have kiddos at the home, you'd best keep it out of arm's reach.

Here's the response I got from doTERRA saying that their olive oil is {a "complete distill":

You can let her know that our Peppermint uses complete
distillation. There's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and finish and we utilize complete. |} Supply: my email.) |}

So if in fact, the first distillation of peppermint oil would be the most Valuable, then their olive oil may not be top quality.

If There's truly no such thing as more than 1 preservative of peppermint, As many state, then why's doTERRA saying that there is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and complete purification of peppermint? Possibly it was a mistake.

Please note, this whole topic is very confusing and I'm digging into it More and am going to be adding more information to this show about it or addressing it in another article. It is possible to read some information in later posts about why one chemist believes that doTERRA's peppermint mint smell this manner.

I shall add, however, that the most crucial thing to me about the whole Issue was that I could never get good information regarding WHY their peppermint smelled the manner that it did. |}

Report this ad

In 1 movie, one of the founders of doTERRA stated that their peppermint Smelled amazing because it was from Washington. {Well, other peppermints are out of Washington. |}

Then, while exploring the whole thing, somebody else from the company said It was since it was distilled only from the leaves and the blossoms. I could not get a true answer on it. I tried for weeks and months. It's a really disconcerting situation when I can not get answers to questions like this.

promoting the top of the line quality. |} Their Ylang ylang, however, is also a complete distillation. |} Some may say that this is an issue of taste, but at the essential oils industry, the first loaf of ylang ylang is much more valued and therefore, a higher priced oil. To their credit, doTERRA does phone their ylang ylang an entire distill on their site.

Ylang Ylang first distill (which can be referred to as"additional") is generally Regarded as the quality of oil that's most sought after / of greatest curative quality--maybe not the complete distillation.

Due to Kitchen Stewardship, I |} Realized that doTERRA does not disclose all the oils within this bug repellant blend. I will say that we've used this to cure after sting itching (along with my son enjoys it), but I believe that not including ingredients on a tag isn't preferable. (UPDATE -- doTERRA now discloses the components of their Terra Shield mix. I'm happy they are doing this.)

What I believe is troubling here is that doTERRA Produces a Whole Lot of claims About their monies being the best--top quality. And their costs convinced reflect that. I do not believe I would buy complete, 2nd or even 3rd distillation oil for more than other companies are selling 1st distill for--would you?

UPDATE 4/16: I will be updating this distillation information.

Of course, there are other things to consider --purity, etc.. So we will Keep the dialog going and touch on different businesses too.

I hope this all makes sense. If not--ask away.

Thank you for your patience! |} It has been a long road, but I guarantee, we |} Are nearing the finish.

This is not always a drawback, but thought I must point it out because Frankincense is such a favorite essential oil nowadays.

Most companies sell just 1 variety of Frankincense Oil, or even several Varieties, but doTERRA's Frankincense is, at least as of this date I'm writing this accession to this article (Aug 2016), a mix of different kinds (source):

-- carterii (generally the cheapest )
{-- serrata
-- frereana

5. |} No Organic Certification

One of the Things Which bugs me about doTERRA is They don't have any certified organic oils. What I have heard is that it is too hard for them to get that certification from each one the states that they source from. Emily Wright states:

The reason for this is since we source from so many developing nations. The certification requirements and accessibility differs from country to country. Some states do not even have a certification offering.

I get it. It can be hard. However they can source some or many of them Organically if they wanted to. At least I see other companies doing this. Perhaps I'm wrong, but that's the way it seems to me. I have looked into natural certification before and it wasn't as expensive as most companies (those without certificate ) make it out to be.

6. Country of Origin

As of this 2018 upgrade of the article, all or Lots of the oils out of doTERRA do Not have a country of origin indicated on the website. This can be interesting especially since the organization and/or its reps repeatedly state that they can not get organic certification because of it being hard to get it from the states where their monies are sourced.

I heard from a reader That There's source map for doTERRA oils, but I could not find it. {I did locate one page that reveals sourcing for Spikenard and Petitgrain. |} It shows that the Petitgrain Oil is sourced from Paraguay. Other companies have organic Petitgrain out of Paraguay so I would be interested in hearing their other oils are from to see if their claim about organic being something that they can not do would be not.

Same Resource for Oils?

2018 Update: Here is something interesting that only came into my attention. Young alive and doTERRA appear to have the exact same source for some of their own oils.

Look at these sources and see that Bio Young Aromas is the provider To both businesses.

Not certain what to make of the.

There are some other things about those companies and I could not go into all Of these for various reasons.

When I first wrote this particular series, doTERRA'd Hardly Any oils so if you had been On the lookout for a business which could be a 1 stop shop, then it wasn't a really fantastic option. That has changed somewhat since that time. |}

The two businesses have a big command over the marketplace and There's a lot Of tension between the two. I believe that it's difficult to say which is best, and obviously different aspects of each company continue to alter making them both kind of moving goals.

My goal here wasn't really to say which of these was best, but to talk about Different aspects of each of those"essential oil powerhouses" in the midst of my search for the best essential oil company and point out some of my worries with both of these.

What do you believe?

Do you think one is better than the other or would you rather not utilize Either of these?
