Young Essential|}

Young Living or doTERRA?
This is one of those big questions out there from the vital oils world.

It makes sense That Many of Individuals are asking this question, because those Two companies possess a massive market share in the business.

This post is just one in my search to find the "best" Essential oils firm , and while it's a bit off the beaten path, it's one I thought that I should write.

Admitting when You're Mistaken

Before we get in the comparison, let me say that I've had to confess I was Wrong about things before. |}

-- My believing which Lilla have been a waste of money (see my"I was wrong" Lilla Rose review). |}
-- or stating my Organic Dishwasher Rinse Aid proved to be a fantastic idea.

We have to be willing to admit we're wrong.

When I began my trip with essential oils (that I never expected to Proceed, by the way--I originally believed that essential oils were a scam), I moved with Young Living. Because it worked.

As time wore on, but I wasn't sure what to think.

{

Remember my passionate posts about their Thieves |} and Peppermint and Wintergreen?

I had been pretty excited about the results I'd had, but as I began writing about Essential oils, I began having some second thoughts. Specifically, 1 rep from doTERRA began pointing out a few matters that had me rethinking my choice and wondering when I made the ideal choice or not.

And while I had been doing my investigating, a few different things surfaced up About both Young Living and doTERRA which made me think and wonder much more. About both businesses.

It was difficult to sort through all of the information, but I will lay out Most of it for you here so that you can see a few of the concerns which came to my attention. is not everything that I found to be disconcerting, but it's a good deal of it. |}

If you've been searching into essential oils at all, Odds Are you have come

You've for sure heard"Young Living is the best!" |} Or"doTERRA is the most Pure".

Or something like that.

I touched on a few of those issues in the Start of my Greatest Essential Oils Collection. But here is more.

Young Living Review 1. Reputation and Ethics -- |}{

First of all, Young Living was pretty much |} The first on the block. They made essential oils mainstream. There is something to be said for that. |}

However, there are some pretty not-so-savory items online about D. Gary Young. Obviously, the internet can be filled with truths and lies. But I still think these things might be worth paying attention to. |} Dr. Stephen Barrett has written a load of unsavory things about D. Gary Young. In fact, this info is a whole lot of what gave me pause when I originally was looking into registering with YL. I mean, the Thieves Oil worked great for me personally, but I actually didn't like what I was studying. |}

READ  How To Battle Depression Naturally

I do have my worries about Mr. Barrett--mainly that he is basically an "anti-alternative therapy" hound. And I like alternative therapies. The majority of them, at least.

I personally am very worried about abuses at the alternative medical field. But I'm also worried about abuses in Western medicine. |}

My Loved Ones and I have been harmed by the practices of Classic Western Medication (overuse of anti-biotics, over-use of prescriptions meds, physicians misdiagnosing acid reflux, etc.). |} In some cases, we've been healed regardless of what mainstream doctors told us to do.

understand there are abuses on both sides. |} But Quackwatch seems to be just Targeting everything option: Chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese medicine....You title it. |} When it's alternative, it's Barrett's goal.

{

I could go on and on about his Website, but suffice it to say That I'm not |} Sure of all Barrett's accusations from Gary Young. (UPDATE -- All of remarks by Mr. Barrett from Gary Young appear to have been eliminated so that I can't cite them any longer.)

However, his writings about Young Living and Gary Young leave something to ponder. Moreso in light of what else I discovered...

2.

I discovered this interesting entry referring to Young Living OSHA offenses . I didn't find any by the other oils companies, although I didn't look all of of those vital oils companies up, needless to say. This would take a long time and I could not find them for sure.

Now, Young Living is the earliest oils firm, so they've had more time for There to be offenses, and each the offenses appear to be of the exact same incident.

Obviously, OSHA violations don't indicate that a provider is bad. If they Cleaned up their procedures properly, then possibly their new procedures are better than ever before.

3. Non-Indigenous Plants --

Many A Fantastic amount (updated 4/2015) of Young Living's farms are located in the U.S. I feel that is fine for a business being more"in control" of the merchandise, but not good if you follow traditional wisdom that crops grow best (and have the best therapeutic qualities) when they're grown in their indigenous locations (in which they're supposed to grow naturally).

If you browse through the remarks of Greatest Essential Oils Components 3 & 2 , you will see that Young Living repetitions tout that YL farms have been from the U.S. as being an edge --that it gives Young Living control over the whole procedure. Maybe, but other businesses like doTERRA and the majority of the other companies I've looked into have their monies sourced from wherever the crops grow naturally for higher quality.

4. What's That Smell? {

You know I like testing things before recommending them to you, like in myown: |}

Greatest {Cinnamon Sugar and
Greatest Eye Makeup Removerposts. |}

You then won't be amazed to know that we did so with essential Oils as well.

{

I bought Young Living, doTERRA, Mountain Rose Herbs, Aura Cacia, and two |} Other companies' oils also did a little"Smell Challenge" with my not-so-specially-trained Smell Testing Panel (a.k.a. my family). |}

5. Product Claims

{In the literature which I obtained from Young Living when I signed up, there were Thieves® brochures. |} The Brochure mentioned this research done that seemingly addressed the superior therapeutic value of this oil.

I looked up the evaluations on the Internet to see what they had been about, because I was Curious to observe the exact effects and discovered, however, that the analysis was done on generic Eucalyptus Oil--maybe not to Thieves Oil.

Huh? So it appeared to me that the company was stating that it had been proven That their Thieves® oil was demonstrated to be effective, when what was the situation was that Eucalyptus, 1 component of Thieves®, was demonstrated to be effective.

In a feeling, that's fine, I suppose. But I still was confused and chose to email headquarters.

This was their answer:

THE SMELL CHALLENGE: |}

We needed a blind odor test of 3-5 brands of the same oil.

In each instance, Young Living has been singled out as with a compound (synthetic) overtone.

Does that mean there were synthetics added?

Not always of course, but we still didn't care for this.

6. Country of Origin

As of this 2018 upgrade of the article, all or Lots of the oils from Young Living do not have a country of source indicated on the site.

DoTERRA Inspection {

Besides buying the Young Living Starter Kit, |} I also purchased a large kit of doTERRA's oils to try them out from YL. I asked doTERRA reps and company employees heaps of queries, and that I used their oils exclusively for awhile.

1 thing that I really like about doTERRA is their educational tools -- {And also, their oils smell good. |}

But their great smell a part of what worries me.

1 thing I really don't care for is that a Good Deal of doTERRA reps (and Corporate workers as well) say something like,"You will know it works by its odor."

{

This by doTERRA's website:"A 100% pure therapeutic-grade |} Essential oil should have a balanced, broad fragrance profile and should smell crystal clean." |} I don't know about you, but I don't know what"crystal clear" means.

Before I go into more--I mentioned distillation techniques in one of my Previous articles. Basically, the moving wisdom about essential oils is that you put the plant parts and water at a distiller and under reduced pressure and low temperatures, you distill the vital oils out of the plant.

They travel down a tube and into a vat--along with the steam. |} The oil Collects on top of the water and is eliminated and--voila--you've got essential oils.

The most coveted, and most expensive (and thought to be the most Therapeutic) oil is that which is accumulated during the first portion of the distillation interval. The resulting oil is known as"first distilled."

{

This"first distillation" only applies to ylang ylang and maybe |} Peppermint, according to what I've learned. {

1. |} PEPPERMINT {

DoTERRA's peppermint smells |} great. |}

But that might be a issue. Here's why.

{

Most peppermint essential oils smell like the peppermint you find growing |} Outside in character. Kind of herby rather than like a candy cane.

Candy-cane-smelling peppermint seems to be based on Several sources, possibly out of a redistill. The oils are either redistilled or some elements are removed to give the oil a sterile pepperminty candy odor. (Source).

Another alternative is that someone did something else to the peppermint Petroleum to reduce the herby odor.

This is exactly what doTERRA's peppermint oils smell like. |} So yummy, In fact, that in case you have kiddos at the house, you'd best keep it out of arm's reach.

Here's the answer I got from doTERRA saying that their peppermint oil is. {a "complete distill":

|}

You can let her know that our Peppermint uses complete
distillation. There is 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and complete and we utilize complete. |} (Source: my email.) |}

So if in Actuality, the first distillation of peppermint oil would be the most Valuable, then their peppermint oil might not be top quality.

If there is no such thing as more than 1 preservative of peppermint, As many say, then why is doTERRA saying that there is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and total distillation of peppermint? Maybe it was an error.

Please note, this whole subject Is Quite confusing and I am digging into it More and am going to be adding more info to this show about it or addressing it in another article. It is possible to read some information in later posts about why one chemist believes that doTERRA's peppermint mint smell this manner.

I shall add, however, that the most crucial thing to me about the entire Difficulty was that I could never get good info regarding WHY their peppermint smelled the manner that it did. |}

Report this ad

In 1 video, one of the creators of doTERRA stated that their peppermint Smelled amazing because it had been from Washington. {Well, other peppermints are out of Washington. |}

Next, while exploring the Entire thing, someone else in the company said It was because it had been distilled only from the leaves and the blossoms. I could not get a real answer on it. I tried for months and months. It is a really disconcerting situation when I can't get answers to questions such as this.

2.

DoTERRA prides itself on selling at the top of the line quality. |} Their an entire distillation. |} Some can say that this is a matter of taste, but at the vital oils industry, the first loaf of ylang ylang is more appreciated and therefore, a higher priced oil. To their credit, doTERRA will phone their ylang ylang an entire distill on their website.

Ylang Ylang first distill (that is Known as"additional") is generally Considered to be the quality of oil that's most sought after / of greatest therapeutic quality--maybe not the complete distillation.

3. TERRASHIELD {

Thanks to Kitchen Stewardship, I |} Realized that doTERRA does not disclose all the oils within this insect repellant blend. I'll say that we've used this to treat after sting itching (along with my son enjoys it), but I think that not including ingredients on a tag is not preferable. (UPDATE -- doTERRA now discloses the components of the Terra Shield mix. I'm glad they're doing that.)

What I think is troubling here is that doTERRA Produces a Whole Lot of claims About their monies being the best--top quality. And their prices convinced reflect that. I don't think I would buy complete, 2nd or 3rd distillation oil for more than other companies are selling 1st distill for--do you?

UPDATE 4/16: I'm updating this distillation information.

Obviously, there are additional things to think about--purity, etc.. So we'll Keep the dialog going and touch on different businesses too.

I hope this all makes sense. Otherwise --request.

Thank you for your patience! |} This was a long road, but I promise, we |} Are nearing the end.

4. FRANKINCENSE

This is not always a drawback, but thought I should point it out since Frankincense is such a favorite essential oil these days.

Most companies sell either just 1 variety of Frankincense Oil, or several Varieties, but doTERRA's Frankincense is, at least as of this date I am writing this addition to this article (Aug 2016), a mix of different kinds (origin ):

-- carterii (typically the least expensive)
{-- serrata
-- frereana

5. |} No Organic Certification

One of the things that bugs me about doTERRA is They don't have any certified organic oils. What I have heard is that it's too difficult for them to get that certificate from each one the countries that they source from. Emily Wright says:

The reason for this is because we supply from so many developing countries. The certificate requirements and accessibility differs from country to country. Some countries don't even have a certificate offering.

I do it. It can be difficult. However they could source a few or many of them Organically if they desired to. I see other companies doing this. Maybe I'm incorrect, but that's the way it seems to me. I've looked into organic certificate before and it wasn't as expensive as most companies (those without certification) make it out to be.

6. Country of Origin

As of this 2018 upgrade of the article, all or Lots of the oils out of doTERRA do Not have a country of source indicated on the site. This is interesting especially because the company and/or its reps repeatedly say that they can't get organic certification due to it being difficult to get it from the countries where their monies have been sourced.

I heard from a reader that there is source map for doTERRA oils, but I could not find it. {I did find one page that reveals sourcing for Spikenard and Petitgrain. |} It shows that the Petitgrain Oil is derived from Paraguay. Other companies have organic Petitgrain out of Paraguay so I would be interested in hearing where their other oils are out to see whether their claim about organic being something that they can't do would be not.

Same Resource for Oils?

2018 Update: Here's something interesting that only came to my attention. Young Living and doTERRA appear to have exactly the exact same resource for some of their own oils.

Look at the following sources and see that Bio Young Aromas is the provider To both businesses.

https://www.seair.co.in/us-import/i-doterra.aspx

http://portexaminer.com/trade-data/bio-young-aromas-co-ltd-young-living-essentials-oils/banqsha5283692/

Not sure what to make of the.

Conclusion

There are some other things about those companies and I could not go into all Of these for a variety of reasons.

When I wrote this series, doTERRA'd Hardly Any oils if you were Looking for a business which could be a 1 stop shop, then it wasn't a really fantastic option. That's changed somewhat since that time. |}

Both businesses have a large command over the Market and there is a lot Of tension between both. I think that it's hard to say which is best, and obviously different aspects of each business continue to change making them both sort of moving goals.

My goal here wasn't to say that of them was greatest, but to Discuss Different aspects of each of those"essential oil powerhouses" in the midst of my search for the best essential oil business and point out some of my concerns with both of these.

What do you think?

Do you think you is Far Better than the other or do you rather not work with Either of these?
