Young Essential|} Oil Products : Young Living or doTERRA ?

Young Living or doTERRA?
This is one of the big questions out there in the vital oils planet.

It makes sense that a lot of Individuals are asking this question, since those Two companies own a massive market share in the business.

This post is just one in my hunt to find the "finest" Essential oils company, and while it's a bit off the beaten path, it's one I thought I should write.

Admitting when You're Wrong

Before we get into the comparison, let me say that I've had to confess I was Incorrect about things before. |}

-- My believing which Lilla Rose Flexi Clips were a waste of money (see my"I was wrong" Lilla Rose review). |}
-- or stating my Natural Dishwasher Rinse Aid proved to be a great idea.

We need to be prepared to admit we're wrong.

When I started out my journey with essential oils (that I never anticipated to Proceed, by the way--I initially believed that essential oils were a scam), I went with Young Living. Because it worked.

As time wore on, but I wasn't sure what to think.

{

Remember my passionate posts about their Thieves |} and Peppermint and Wintergreen?

I was pretty excited about the results I had, but as I began writing about Essential oils, I began having some second thoughts. Specifically, one rep from doTERRA began pointing out a few things that had me rethinking my choice and wondering when I made the ideal choice or not.

And while I was doing my exploring, a few different things surfaced up About both Youthful Living and doTERRA which made me wonder and think much more. About both businesses.

It was hard to sort through All the advice, but I'm going to lay out Most of it for you so that you can view a few of the concerns which came to my attention. This isn't everything that I found to be disconcerting, but it's a lot of it. |}

If you've been looking into essential oils in Any Way, chances are you have come across Young Living and doTERRA.

You've for sure heard"Young Living is the best!" |} Or even"doTERRA is your most Pure".

Or something like that.

I touched on a few of those issues in the beginning of my Best Essential Oils series. But here's more.

Young Living Review 1. Standing and Ethics -- |}{

First of all, Young Living was pretty much |} The very first on the cube. They literally made essential oils . There is something to be said for that. |}

But, there are some pretty not-so-savory things on the internet about D. Gary Young. Obviously, the internet can be full of truths and lies. But I still think these things may be worth paying attention to. |} Dr. Stephen Barrett has written a load of unsavory things about D. Gary Young. In fact, this information is a whole lot of what gave me pause when I initially was looking into registering with YL. excellent for me, but I actually did not like what I was reading. |}

READ  Gaba For Anxiety Reviews

Now, I really do have my concerns about Mr. Barrett--largely that he's basically an "anti-alternative therapy" hound. And I like alternative therapies. The majority of them, at the least.

I am very concerned about abuses in the other medical field. I am also concerned about abuses in Western medicine. |}

My Loved Ones and I have been hurt by the practices of Classic Western Medication (overuse of anti-biotics, over-use of prescriptions meds, doctors misdiagnosing acid reflux, etc.). |} In some cases, we've been cured regardless of what mainstream physicians told us to do.

understand that there are abuses on both sides. |} However, Quackwatch appears to be just Targeting everything option: Chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese medicine....You name it. |} If it's alternative, it's Barrett's goal.

{

I really could go on and on about his site, but suffice it to say That I'm not |} Sure of all Barrett's accusations against Gary Young. (UPDATE -- All remarks by Mr. Barrett against Gary Young seem to have been removed so I can't cite them any longer.)

But, his writings about Young Living and Gary Young abandon something to ponder. Moreso in light of what else I found...

2. OSHA Violations --

I found this interesting entry speaking to Young Living OSHA offenses . I didn't discover some by the other oils firms, although I did not look all of the vital oils firms up, needless to say. That would take a long long time and I could not find them for sure.

Now, Young Living is your earliest oils firm, so they have had longer time for There to be violations, and all the violations seem to be of the same incident.

Obviously, OSHA violations do not mean that a provider is bad. If they Cleaned up their processes properly, then possibly their new processes are better than ever before.

3.

Many A Fantastic amount (upgraded 4/2015) of Young Living's farms can be found in the U.S. I feel that is fine for a company being more"in control" of their merchandise, but not good if you follow traditional wisdom that crops grow best (and have the very best therapeutic qualities) if they're grown in their indigenous locations (in which they're supposed to grow naturally).

If you read through the remarks of Best Essential Oils Parts 3 & 2 , you'll see that Young Living reps tout the fact that YL farms are in the U.S. as being an advantage--that it gives Young Living control over the whole procedure. Maybe, but other businesses like doTERRA and the majority of the other firms I've looked to have their monies sourced from where the crops grow naturally for greater quality.

4. What's That Smell? {

You know I like testing things before recommending them to you, like in my:|}

Best {Cinnamon Sugar and
Best Eye Makeup Removerarticles. |}

You then won't be surprised to know that we did this with essential Oils as well.

{

I purchased Young Living, doTERRA, Mountain Rose Herbs, Aura Cacia, and two |} Other firms' oils also did a bit"Smell Challenge" with my not-so-specially-trained Smell Testing Panel (a.k.a. my family). |}

5. Product Claims

{In the literature which I obtained from Young Living when I signed up, there were Thieves® brochures. |} The Brochure mentioned this study done that seemingly addressed the exceptional therapeutic value of the oil.

I looked up the evaluations on the Internet to see what they were about, because I was Curious to observe the specific results and found, however, that the analysis was performed on generic Eucalyptus Oil--not on Thieves Oil.

Huh? So it appeared to me that the company was stating that it was proven Their Thieves® oil was proven to be effective, when what was the situation was that Eucalyptus, one component of Thieves®, was proven to be effective.

In a sense, that is fine, I guess. However, I still was confused and decided to email headquarters.

This was their answer:

THE SMELL CHALLENGE: |}

We needed a blind odor test of 3-5 manufacturers of the identical oil.

In each case, Young Living was singled out as with a compound (artificial ) overtone.

Does that mean that there were synthetics added?

Not always naturally, but we still didn't care for it.

6. Country of Origin

As of the 2018 upgrade of this article, all or Lots of the oils from Young Living do not have a state of origin indicated on the website.

DoTERRA Inspection {

Apart from buying the Young Living Starter Kit, |} I also bought a big kit of doTERRA's oils to try them out against YL. I requested doTERRA reps and corporate workers tons of questions, and I used their oils solely for awhile.

One thing I really like about doTERRA is their educational tools -- {And also, their oils smell good. |}

However, their great smell a part of what concerns me.

One thing I Truly don't care for is that a Good Deal of doTERRA reps (and Corporate employees too ) say something like,"You will know it works by its odor."

{

This by doTERRA's site:"A 100% pure therapeutic-grade |} needs to have a balanced, broad fragrance profile and ought to smell crystal clean" |} I really don't know about you, but I do not know what"crystal clean" means.

Before I enter more--I mentioned distillation techniques in among my Previous posts. Basically, the going wisdom about essential oils is that you put the plant components and water in a distiller and under reduced pressure and low temperatures, you distill the vital oils from the plant.

They travel down a tube and into a vat--and the steam. |} The oil Collects along with the water and is removed and--voila--you've got essential oils.

The most coveted, and most expensive (and thought to be the most Curative ) oil is what is accumulated during the first part of the distillation period. The resulting oil is called"first dried."

{

This"first distillation" just applies to ylang ylang and maybe |} Peppermint, according to what I have learned. {

1. |} PEPPERMINT {

DoTERRA's peppermint scents |} great. |}

But that may be a problem. Here's the reason why.

{

Most peppermint essential oils smell like the peppermint you find growing |} Outside in character. Kind of herby and not like a candy cane.

Candy-cane-smelling peppermint seems to be based on Several resources, possibly out of a redistill. The oils are redistilled or some components are removed to give the oil a sterile pepperminty candy odor.

The other alternative is that somebody did something else to the peppermint Oil to reduce the herby odor.

just what doTERRA's peppermint oils smell like. |} So yummy, In fact, that in case you have kiddos in the house, you'd best keep it from arm's reach.

Here is the answer I got from doTERRA stating that their peppermint oil is {a "complete distill":

|}

You can let her know that our Peppermint utilizes complete
distillation. There's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and complete and we use complete. |} Supply: my email.) |}

So if in Actuality, the very first distillation of peppermint oil is the most Valuable, then their peppermint oil may not be top quality.

If There's no such thing as more than one preservative of peppermint, As many state, then why is doTERRA stating that there is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and total distillation of peppermint? Possibly it was a mistake.

Please note, this whole subject is very confusing and I am digging into it More and am going to be adding more information to this series about it and/or addressing it in another article. You can read some advice in later articles about why one chemist thinks that doTERRA's peppermint mint smell this manner.

I shall add, however, that the most disconcerting thing to me about the whole Difficulty was that I could never find good information regarding WHY their peppermint smelled the manner that it did. |}

Report this ad

In one movie, one of the creators of doTERRA said that their peppermint Smelled amazing because it was from Washington. {Well, other peppermints are out of Washington. |}

Next, while researching the Entire thing, somebody else from the company said It was since it was distilled just from the leaves and the flowers. I could not get a true response on it. I tried for weeks and months. It's a really disconcerting situation when I can't get answers to questions such as this.

2. YLANG YLANG

DoTERRA prides itself on selling at the top of the line quality. |} Their Ylang ylang, however, is also a complete distillation. |} Some may say that this is a matter of taste, but in the vital oils industry, the first distill of ylang ylang is more valued and therefore, a more costly oil. To their credit, doTERRA will phone their ylang ylang an entire distill on their site.

Ylang Ylang first distill (that is referred to as"extra") is typically Regarded as the quality of oil that is most sought after / of greatest therapeutic quality--not the comprehensive distillation.

3. TERRASHIELD {

Due to Kitchen Stewardship, I |} Realized that doTERRA doesn't disclose all the oils within this bug repellant blend. I will say that we have used this to treat after bite itching (and my son likes it), however I believe that not including ingredients on a label is not preferable. (UPDATE -- doTERRA now discloses the components of their Terra Shield blend. I am glad they're doing that.)

What I believe is troubling is that doTERRA makes a Whole Lot of claims About their monies being the best--top quality. And their prices convinced reflect that. I do not believe I'd purchase complete, 2nd or even 3rd distillation oil for over other companies are selling 1st distill for--do you?

UPDATE 4/16: I'm upgrading this distillation information.

Obviously, there are additional things to consider --purity, etc.. So we will Keep the conversation going and touch on different businesses as well.

I hope this all makes sense. If not--ask away.

Thanks for your patience! |} This was a long road, but I promise, we |} Are nearing the finish.

4. FRANKINCENSE

This is not always a negative, but thought I must point it out since Frankincense is this a favorite essential oil these days.

Most firms sell just one number of Frankincense Oil, or even several Varieties, however doTERRA's Frankincense is, at least as of the date I am writing this accession to this article (Aug 2016), a blend of different kinds (source):

-- carterii (typically the least expensive)
{-- serrata
-- frereana

5. |} No Organic Certification

Among the things that bugs me about doTERRA is They don't have any certified organic oils. What I have heard is that it's too hard for them to find that certificate from each one the states that they source from. Emily Wright says:

The cause of this is since we source from so many developing nations. The certificate requirements and availability differs from nation to nation. Some states do not even have a certificate offering.

I get it. It can be hard. But they could source a few or many of these Organically if they desired to. I find other companies doing it. Maybe I am incorrect, but that is the way it appears to me. I've looked into natural certificate before and it wasn't as pricey as most companies (those without certificate ) make it out to be.

6. Country of Origin

As of the 2018 upgrade of this article, all or Lots of the oils out of doTERRA do Not have a state of origin indicated on the website. This is interesting especially because the organization and/or its reps repeatedly state that they can't get organic certification due to it being hard to get it in the states where their oils are sourced.

I heard from a reader that there is source map for doTERRA oils, however I couldn't find it. {I did find one page that shows sourcing for Spikenard and Petitgrain. |} It demonstrates that the Petitgrain Oil is derived from Paraguay. Other firms have organic Petitgrain out of Paraguay so I'd be interested in hearing their other oils are out to see whether their claim about organic being something they can't do is reasonable or not.

Same Source for Oils?

2018 Update: Here's something interesting that just came to my attention. Young Living and doTERRA seem to have the exact same resource for a number of their oils.

Look at the following sources and see that Bio Young Aromas is your supplier To both businesses.

https://www.seair.co.in/us-import/i-doterra.aspx

http://portexaminer.com/trade-data/bio-young-aromas-co-ltd-young-living-essentials-oils/banqsha5283692/

Not sure what to make of this.

Conclusion

There are some other things about those firms and I could not enter all Of them for a variety of reasons.

When I wrote this series, doTERRA'd very few oils so if you had been Looking for a company that could be a one stop shop, then it wasn't really a great option. That has changed somewhat since that time. |}

Both businesses have a large command over the marketplace and There's a lot Of tension between both. I believe it's difficult to say which is best, and obviously different facets of each company continue to change which makes them both sort of moving targets.

My goal here wasn't to say that of them was greatest, but to Discuss Various facets of each of those"crucial oil powerhouses" in the midst of my hunt for the most effective essential oil company and point out a number of my worries with both of them.

What do you believe?

Do you think you is better than the other or do you rather not utilize Either of them?
