Young Essential|} Oil Products : Young Living or doTERRA ?

Young Living or doTERRA?
This is only one of those big questions out there from the vital oils world.

It makes sense that a lot of Individuals are asking this question, since these Two companies own a massive market share in the business.

This post is just one in my hunt for the "best" Essential oils company, and while it's somewhat off the beaten path, it's one I thought I should write.

Admitting when You're Wrong

Before we get into the comparison, let me say that I've had to admit I had been Wrong about things before. |}

-- My believing that Lilla Rose Flexi Clips were a waste of money (see my"I was wrong" Lilla Rose inspection ). |}
-- or stating my Organic Dishwasher Rinse Aid proved to be a great idea.

We need to be prepared to admit we were wrong.

When I started out my journey with essential oils (which I never expected to Go on, incidentally --I initially thought that essential oils were a scam), I went with Young Living. Because it worked.

As time wore on, but I was not certain what to think.

{

Remember my passionate posts about their Thieves |}

I had been pretty excited about the results I had, but as I began writing about Essential oils, I began having some second thoughts. In particular, one rep from doTERRA began pointing out some things that had me rethinking my choice and wondering when I made the right choice or not.

And while I had been doing my exploring, some different things popped up About both Young Living and doTERRA that made me wonder and think even more. About both businesses.

It was hard to sort through all of the advice, but I'm going to lay out Most of it for you so you can view some of the concerns that came to my attention. This isn't everything that I found to be disconcerting, but it's a lot of it. |}

If you've been looking into essential oils in Any Way, chances are you have come

You have for sure heard"Young Living is the best!" |} Or"doTERRA is the most Pure".

Or something like that.

I touched on some of those issues in the Start of my Best Essential Oils series. But here is more.

Young Living Review 1. Reputation and Ethics -- |}{

First of all, Young Living was pretty much |} The very first on the cube. They literally made essential oils mainstream. There's something to be said for that. |}

READ  What Medicine Is Good For Stress And Anxiety

But, there are some pretty not-so-savory things online about D. Gary Young. Obviously, the net can be filled with truths and lies. But I still think these things may be worth paying attention to. |} Dr. Stephen Barrett has written a load of unsavory things about D. Gary Young. In fact, this information is a whole lot of what gave me pause when I initially was looking into signing up with YL. excellent for me, but I really did not enjoy what I had been reading. |}

I really do have my concerns about Mr. Barrett--mainly that he is basically an "anti-alternative treatment" hound. And I enjoy alternative therapies. Most of them, at least.

I am very worried about abuses in the alternative medical field. I am also worried about abuses in Western medicine. |}

My Loved Ones and I have been hurt by the practices of Classic Western Medication (overuse of anti-biotics, over-use of prescriptions meds, physicians misdiagnosing acid reflux, etc.). |} In some cases, we've been cured despitewhat mainstream physicians told us to perform.

I know there are abuses on both sides. |} However, Quackwatch seems to be just Targeting everything option: Chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese medicine....You name it. |} If it's alternative, it's Barrett's goal.

{

I really could go on and on about his site, but suffice it to say That I'm not |} Sure of all of Barrett's accusations against Gary Young. (UPDATE -- All of comments by Mr. Barrett against Gary Young appear to have been removed so I can not cite them no more.)

But, his writings concerning Young Living and Gary Young abandon something to ponder. Moreso in light of what else I found...

2. OSHA Violations --

I found this interesting entry referring to Young Living OSHA violations. I didn't discover some by another oils firms, although I did not look all of those vital oils firms up, needless to say. This would take a very long time and I couldn't find them all for sure.

Now, Young Living is the oldest oils company, so they have had longer time for There to be violations, and each of the violations appear to be of the exact same incident.

Obviously, OSHA violations don't indicate a company is bad. If they Cleaned up their processes properly, then possibly their new processes are better than ever.

3.

Many A Fantastic number (updated 4/2015) of Young Living's farms can be found in the U.S. I think that's fine for a business being more"in control" of the merchandise, but not good if you follow traditional wisdom that crops grow best (and have the best therapeutic qualities) when they are grown in their native locations (in which they are supposed to grow naturally).

If you read through the comments of Best Essential Oils Parts 2 & 3, you will notice that Young Living repetitions tout that YL farms have been from the U.S. as being an edge --that it gives Young Living control over the entire procedure. Perhaps, but other companies like doTERRA and the majority of the other firms I've looked to have their oils sourced from where the crops grow naturally for higher quality.

4. What's That Smell? {

You know I like testing things before recommending them to you, like in my:|}

Best {Cinnamon Sugar and
Best Eye Makeup Removerarticles. |}

Then you won't be surprised to know that people did this with essential Oils as well.

{

I purchased Young Living, doTERRA, Mountain Rose Herbs, Aura Cacia, and two |} Other firms' oils also did a bit"Smell Challenge" with my not-so-specially-trained Smell Testing Panel (a.k.a. my household ). |}

5. Product Claims

{From the literature that I got from Young Living when I signed up, there were Thieves® brochures. |} The Booklet said this research done that seemingly addressed the superior therapeutic value of the oil.

I looked up the tests on the Internet to see what they were all about, as I was Curious to observe the specific results and found, however, the study was performed on generic Eucalyptus Oil--not on Thieves Oil.

Huh? So it seemed to me the company was stating that it had been proven That their Thieves® oil was proven to be effective, when what really was the situation was that Eucalyptus, one component of Thieves®, was proven to be effective.

In a sense, that's fine, I guess. However, I still was confused and chose to email headquarters.

This was their response:

THE SMELL CHALLENGE: |}

READ  High Dose Magnesium

We had a blind odor test of 3-5 brands of the same oil.

In each case, Young Living has been singled out as with a chemical (artificial ) overtone.

Does that mean there were synthetics additional?

Not necessarily naturally, but we still didn't care for it.

6. Country of Origin

As of the 2018 upgrade of the post, all or many of the oils from Young Living do not have a state of origin indicated on the website.

DoTERRA Review {

Apart from buying the Young Living Starter Kit, |} I also purchased a large kit of doTERRA's oils to test them out against YL. I requested doTERRA reps and company employees heaps of questions, and I used their oils solely for awhile.

1 thing I really enjoy about doTERRA is their educational tools -- {And also, their oils smell good. |}

However, their great smell is part of what concerns me.

1 thing I Truly don't care for is that a Good Deal of doTERRA reps (and Corporate workers as well) say something like,"You'll know it works by its odor."

{

This by doTERRA's site:"A 100% pure therapeutic-grade |} Essential oil should have a balanced, broad fragrance profile and should smell crystal clean." |} I don't know about you, but I don't know what"crystal clear" means.

Before I go into more--I said distillation techniques in one of my own Previous posts. Fundamentally, the going wisdom of essential oils is that you set the plant parts and water in a distiller and under low pressure and low temperatures, you distill the vital oils from the plant.

They travel down a tube and into a vat--and the steam. |} The oil Collects on top of the water and is removed and--voila--you have essential oils.

The most coveted, and many expensive (and thought to be the most Curative ) oil is what is collected during the first portion of the distillation period. The resulting oil is known as"first distilled."

{

This"first distillation" just applies to ylang ylang and possibly |} Peppermint, according to what I've learned. {

1. |} PEPPERMINT {

DoTERRA's peppermint smells |} great. |}

But that may be a problem. Here's the reason why.

{

Most peppermint essential oils smell like the peppermint you find growing |} Out in nature. Kind of herby rather than really like a candy cane.

Candy-cane-smelling peppermint is apparently, based on Several sources, possibly from a redistill. The oils are either redistilled or some components are removed to give the oil a clean pepperminty candy odor. (Source).

The other choice is that somebody did something else to the peppermint Petroleum to reduce the herby odor.

just what doTERRA's peppermint oils smell like. |} So yummy, In reality, that in case you have kiddos in the home, you'd best keep it from arm's reach.

Here's the response I got from doTERRA stating that their olive oil is {a "complete distill":

|}

You can let her know our Peppermint uses complete
distillation. There's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and finish and we use complete. |} (Source: my email.) |}

So if in Actuality, the very first distillation of peppermint oil would be the most Valuable, then their olive oil may not be high quality.

If there is truly no such thing as more than one preservative of peppermint, As many state, then why's doTERRA stating there is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and total distillation of peppermint? Maybe it was an error.

Please notethis entire subject is very confusing and I'm digging into it More and will be adding more information to this show about it and/or addressing it in a different post. It is possible to read some advice in later articles about why one chemist believes that doTERRA's peppermint mint smell this way.

I shall add, however, the most crucial thing to me concerning the whole Difficulty was that I could never get solid information about WHY their peppermint smelled the way that it did. |}

Report this ad

In one video, one of the founders of doTERRA said that their peppermint Smelled amazing because it had been from Washington. {Well, other peppermints are from Washington. |}

Then, while researching the Entire thing, somebody else from the company said It was since it had been distilled just from the leaves and the flowers. I couldn't get a true response on it. I tried for months and months. It is a really disconcerting situation when I can not get answers to questions like this.

2. YLANG YLANG

DoTERRA prides itself on selling the top of the line quality. |} Their Ylang ylang, however, is also a complete distillation. |} Some can say this is an issue of taste, but in the vital oils industry, the first distill of ylang ylang is much more appreciated and therefore, a higher priced oil. To their credit, doTERRA will call their ylang ylang a complete distill on their site.

Ylang Ylang first distill (which is referred to as"extra") is typically Considered to be the quality of oil that's most sought after / of greatest curative quality--not the comprehensive distillation.

3. TERRASHIELD {

Due to Kitchen Stewardship, I |} Recognized that doTERRA doesn't disclose all of the oils within this bug repellant blend. I will say that we've used this to treat after sting itching (and my son likes it), however I believe not including ingredients on a tag isn't preferable. (UPDATE -- doTERRA currently exposes the ingredients of the Terra Shield blend. I'm glad they are doing that.)

What I believe is troubling is that doTERRA makes a lot of claims About their oils being the best--high quality. And their costs sure reflect that. I don't believe I would buy whole, 2nd or 3rd distillation oil for more than other companies are selling 1st distill for--would you?

UPDATE 4/16: I'm updating this distillation information.

Obviously, there are other things to consider --purity, etc.. So we will Keep the conversation going and touch on different businesses as well.

Otherwise --ask away.

Thank you for your patience! |} It was a long road, but I guarantee, we |} Are nearing the finish.

4. FRANKINCENSE

This isn't necessarily a drawback, but thought I should point it out because Frankincense is such a popular essential oil nowadays.

Most firms sell either just one number of Frankincense Oil, or several Varieties, however doTERRA's Frankincense is, at least as of the date I'm writing this accession to this post (Aug 2016), a blend of different kinds (source):

-- carterii (typically the least expensive)
{-- serrata
-- frereana

5. |} No Organic Certification

One of the things that bugs me about doTERRA is that they don't have some What I have heard is that it's too hard for them to get that certificate from each one of the states they source from. Emily Wright says:

The cause of this is since we supply from so many developing countries. The certificate requirements and accessibility differs from country to country. Some states don't even have a certificate offering.

I get it. It can be hard. But they can source some or many of them Organically if they desired to. At least I find other companies doing it. Perhaps I'm wrong, but that's the way it appears to me. I've looked into natural certificate before and it was not as expensive as most companies (those without certification) make it out to be.

6. Country of Origin

As of the 2018 upgrade of the post, all or many of the oils from doTERRA do Not have a state of origin indicated on the website. This is interesting especially because the company and/or its representatives repeatedly state they can not find organic certification due to it being hard to get it from the states where their oils have been sourced.

I heard from a reader That There's source map for doTERRA oils, however I couldn't find it. {I did find one page that shows sourcing for Spikenard and Petitgrain. |} It demonstrates the Petitgrain Oil is sourced from Paraguay. Other firms have organic Petitgrain from Paraguay so I would be interested in hearing their other oils are out to see if their claim about organic being something that they can not do would be not.

Same Source for Oils?

2018 Update: Here's something interesting that just came to my attention. Young Living and doTERRA appear to possess the same source for some of their oils.

Look at the following sources and see Bio Young Aromas is the provider To both businesses.

https://www.seair.co.in/us-import/i-doterra.aspx

http://portexaminer.com/trade-data/bio-young-aromas-co-ltd-young-living-essentials-oils/banqsha5283692/

Not certain what to make of the.

Conclusion

There are some other things about those firms and I couldn't go into all Of them for a variety of reasons.

When I wrote this particular series, doTERRA'd very few oils if you were Looking for a company that could be a one stop shop, then it was not a really great alternative. That has changed somewhat since that time. |}

The two businesses have a big command over the Market and there is a lot Of tension between both. I believe that it's difficult to say which is best, and obviously different facets of each business continue to change which makes them both sort of moving targets.

My goal here was not really to say which of these was greatest, but to talk about Different facets of each of those"crucial oil powerhouses" in the middle of my hunt for the best essential oil business and point out some of my concerns with both of them.

What do you believe?

Do you think you is better than the other or would you rather not work with Either of them?
