Young Essential|} Oil Products : Young Living or doTERRA ?

Young Living or doTERRA?
This is one of the big questions out there in the vital oils planet.

It makes sense That Many of Individuals are asking this question, since these Two companies own a massive market share in the business.

This post is just one in my hunt to find the "best" Essential oils company, and while it is a bit off the beaten path, it is one I thought I should write.

Admitting When You Are Mistaken

Before we get into the comparison, Allow Me to say that I have had to confess I was Incorrect about things before. |}

-- My believing that Lilla Rose Flexi Clips were a waste of money (see my"I was wrong" Lilla Rose review). |}
-- or stating my Organic Dishwasher Rinse Aid proved to be a fantastic idea.

We have to be prepared to admit we were wrong.

When I began my trip using essential oils (which I never expected to Go on, by the way--I originally believed that essential oils were a scam), I moved with Young Living. Because it worked.

As time wore on, however, I was not sure what to think.

{

Remember my enthusiastic posts about their Thieves |}

I was pretty excited about the results I'd had, but since I began writing about Essential oils, I began having some second thoughts. In particular, one rep from doTERRA began pointing out some matters that had me rethinking my decision and wondering if I made the ideal decision or not.

And while I was doing my investigating, some different things surfaced up About both Youthful Living and doTERRA that made me wonder and think even more. About both businesses.

It was difficult to sort through all of the advice, but I will lay out Most of it for you so that you can see some of the concerns that came into my attention. is not everything that I found to be disconcerting, but it is a lot of it. |}

If you have been searching into essential oils at all, chances are you have come

You have for sure heard"Young Living is the best!" |} Or even"doTERRA is your most Pure".

Or something like that.

I touched on some of those issues in the beginning of my Greatest Essential Oils series. But here is more.

Young Living Overview 1. Standing and Ethics -- |}{

First of all, Young Living was fairly much |} The first on the cube. They made essential oils . There's something to be said for that. |}

But, there are some fairly not-so-savory things on the internet about D. Gary Young. Obviously, the internet can be filled with lies and truths. However, I think these things may be worth paying attention to. |} Actually, this info is a whole lot of what gave me pause when I originally was looking into registering with YL. excellent for me personally, but I actually did not like what I was reading. |}

I do have my worries about Mr. Barrett--mainly that he is essentially an "anti-alternative therapy" hound. And I like alternative therapies. The majority of them, at the least.

I am very worried about abuses at the alternative medical field. I am also worried about abuses in Western medicine. |}

My family and I have been hurt by the practices of traditional Western Medication (overuse of anti-biotics, over-use of prescriptions meds, doctors misdiagnosing acid reflux, etc.). |} Sometimes, we have been healed regardless of what mainstream physicians told us to do.

I know that there are abuses on both sides. |} But Quackwatch seems to be just Targeting everything option: Chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese medicine....You title it. |} If it's alternative, it is Barrett's goal.

{

I could go on and on about his site, but suffice it to say That I'm not |} Sure of all of Barrett's offenses from Gary Young. (UPDATE -- All comments by Mr. Barrett from Gary Young seem to have been eliminated so I can't cite them any longer.)

But, his writings about Young Living and Gary Young abandon something to ponder. Moreso in light of what else I found...

2. OSHA Violations --

I found this interesting entry speaking to Young Living OSHA violations. I didn't find any by the other oils companies, although I did not look all of of the vital oils companies up, needless to say. This would take a very long time and I could not find them all for sure.

Now, Young Living is your earliest oils firm, so they've had longer time for There to be violations, and each of the violations seem to be of the same incident.

Obviously, OSHA violations don't indicate that a provider is bad. If they Cleaned up their procedures properly, then their new procedures are better than ever before.

3.

Many A good amount (updated 4/2015) of Young Living's farms can be found in the U.S. I feel that's fine for a company being more"in control" of their product, but not great if you follow conventional wisdom that crops grow best (and have the best therapeutic qualities) if they are grown in their indigenous locations (where they are supposed to grow naturally).

If you read through the remarks of Greatest Essential Oils Components 2 & 3, you'll notice that Young Living repetitions tout that YL farms are in the U.S. as being an edge --that it provides Young Living control over the whole process. Maybe, but other companies like doTERRA and the majority of the other companies I have looked to have their oils sourced from where the crops grow naturally for greater quality.

4. What's That Smell? {

You know I like testing things before recommending them to you, like in my:|}

Greatest {Cinnamon Sugar and
Greatest Eye Makeup Removerarticles. |}

Then you won't be amazed to know that we did so with essential Oils as well.

{

I purchased Young Living, doTERRA, Mountain Rose Herbs, Aura Cacia, and two |} Other firms' oils also did a bit"Smell Challenge" with my not-so-specially-trained Smell Testing Panel (a.k.a. my family). |}

5. Product Claims

{From the literature that I obtained from Young Living when I signed up, there were Thieves® brochures. |} The Booklet said this study done that seemingly addressed the exceptional therapeutic value of this oil.

I hunted up the evaluations on the Internet to see what they were all about, as I was Curious to observe the specific effects and found, however, that the analysis was done on generic Eucalyptus Oil--maybe not to Thieves Oil.

Huh? So it seemed to me that the company was stating that it was proven That their Thieves® oil was proven to be effective, when what really was that the case was that Eucalyptus, one element of Thieves®, was proven to be effective.

In a sense, that is fine, I guess. But I was confused and decided to email headquarters.

This was their response:

THE SMELL CHALLENGE: |}

We needed a blind odor test of 3-5 brands of the same oil.

In each case, Young Living has been singled out as having a compound (artificial ) overtone.

READ  My Dog Has Anxiety In His Crate

Does that mean that there were synthetics additional?

Not necessarily of course, but we didn't care for it.

6. Country of Origin

As of this 2018 update of this article, all or Lots of the oils from Young Living don't have a country of source indicated on the website.

DoTERRA Review {

Besides Purchasing the Young Living Starter Kit, |} I also purchased a large kit of doTERRA's oils to try them out from YL. I asked doTERRA reps and company workers tons of questions, and I used their oils exclusively for awhile.

One thing I really like about doTERRA is their educational tools -- {And also, their oils smell great. |}

But their great smell a part of what worries me.

One thing I Truly don't care for is that a lot of doTERRA reps (and Corporate employees too ) say something like,"You'll know it works by its odor."

{

This by doTERRA's site:"A 100% pure therapeutic-grade |} Essential oil should have a balanced, broad fragrance profile and ought to smell crystal clear " |} I don't know about you, but I don't know what"crystal clear" means.

Before I enter more--I mentioned distillation techniques in among my own Previous posts. Fundamentally, the moving wisdom of essential oils is that you put the plant parts and water at a distiller and under reduced pressure and low temperature, you distill the vital oils from the plant.

traveling down a tube and into a vat--and the steam. |} The oil Collects on top of the water and can be eliminated and--voila--you've got essential oils.

The most enviable, and most expensive (and regarded as the most Therapeutic) oil is that which can be collected during the first part of the distillation interval. The resulting oil is called"first dried."

{

This"first distillation" only applies to ylang ylang and possibly |} Peppermint, according to what I've learned. {

1. |} PEPPERMINT {

DoTERRA's peppermint smells |} Good enough to eat--as in"candy cane" good. |}

But that may be a problem. Here's the reason why.

{

Most peppermint essential oils smell like the peppermint you find growing |} Outside in character. Kind of herby and not really like a candy cane.

Candy-cane-smelling peppermint is apparently, according to Several sources, maybe from a redistill. The oils are redistilled or some components are removed to give the oil a sterile pepperminty candy odor. (Source).

The other alternative is that somebody did something else into the peppermint Oil to reduce the herby odor.

This is exactly what doTERRA's peppermint oils smell like. |} So yummy, In fact, that if you have kiddos at the house, you'd best keep it from arm's reach.

Here is the response I got from doTERRA stating that their peppermint oil is. {a "complete distill":

|}

You can let her know that our Peppermint utilizes complete
distillation. There's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and finish and we utilize complete. |} (Source: my email.) |}

So if in Actuality, the first distillation of peppermint oil would be the most Valuable, then their peppermint oil may not be top quality.

If there is truly no such thing as more than one preservative of peppermint, As many state, then why is doTERRA stating that there is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and total purification of peppermint? Maybe it was an error.

Please notethis whole topic is very confusing and I am digging into it More and am going to be adding more info to this series about it or addressing it in another article. It is possible to read some advice in later articles about why one chemist thinks that doTERRA's peppermint mint smell this way.

I shall add, however, that the most crucial thing to me about the whole Difficulty was that I could never find good info regarding WHY their peppermint smelled the way that it did. |}

Report this ad

In one movie, one of the creators of doTERRA said that their peppermint Smelled fantastic because it was from Washington. {Well, other peppermints are from Washington. |}

Next, while researching the Entire thing, somebody else in the company said It was since it was distilled only from the leaves and the blossoms. I could not get a real response on it. I tried for weeks and months. It is a really disconcerting situation when I can't get answers to questions like this.

2.

promoting at the top of the line quality. |} Their an entire distillation. |} Some may say that this is a matter of taste, but at the vital oils sector, the first distill of ylang ylang is more valued and therefore, a higher priced oil. To their credit, doTERRA does phone their ylang ylang an entire distill on their site.

Ylang Ylang first distill (which can be referred to as"additional") is typically Considered to be the quality of oil that's most sought after / of greatest curative quality--maybe not the complete distillation.

3. TERRASHIELD {

Due to Kitchen Stewardship, I |} Realized that doTERRA doesn't disclose all of the oils in this bug repellant blend. I'll say that we've used this to cure after bite itching (along with my son likes it), but I think that not adding ingredients on a tag isn't preferable. (UPDATE -- doTERRA currently exposes the ingredients of their Terra Shield mix. I'm happy they are doing that.)

What I think is troubling is that doTERRA Produces a lot of claims About their monies being the best--top quality. And their costs sure reflect that. I don't think I'd buy complete, 2nd or even 3rd distillation oil for more than other organizations are selling 1st distill for--would you?

UPDATE 4/16: I will be updating this distillation information.

Obviously, there are other things to consider --purity, etc.. So we will Keep the conversation going and touch on different businesses as well.

If not--ask away.

Thank you for your patience! |} It was a long road, but I guarantee, we |} Are nearing the end.

4. FRANKINCENSE

This isn't necessarily a drawback, but thought I should point it out since Frankincense is such a favorite essential oil nowadays.

Most companies sell just one variety of Frankincense Oil, or even several Varieties, but doTERRA's Frankincense is, at least as of this date I am writing this addition to this article (Aug 2016), a mix of different kinds (origin ):

-- carterii (generally the least expensive)
{-- serrata
-- frereana

5. |} No Organic Certification

One of the things that bugs me about doTERRA is that they don't have some certified organic oils. What I have heard is that it is too difficult for them to find that certification from each one of the states that they source from. Emily Wright says:

The reason for this is since we supply from numerous developing countries. The certification requirements and availability differs from country to country. Some states don't even have a certification offering.

I do it. It can be difficult. However they could source some or many of these Organically if they desired to. I see other companies doing it. Maybe I'm incorrect, but that's the way it seems to me. I have looked into natural certification before and it was not as expensive as most companies (those without certification) make it out to be.

6. Country of Origin

As of this 2018 update of this article, all or Lots of the oils from doTERRA do Not have a country of source indicated on the website. This can be interesting especially because the organization and/or its reps repeatedly state that they can't find organic certification because of it being difficult to get it in the states where their monies are sourced.

I heard from a reader that there is source map for doTERRA oils, but I couldn't find it. {I did find one page that shows sourcing for Spikenard and Petitgrain. |} It shows that the Petitgrain Oil is sourced from Paraguay. Other companies have organic Petitgrain from Paraguay so I'd be interested in hearing where their other oils are from to see if their claim about organic being something they can't do would be not.

Same Source for Oils?

2018 Update: Here is something interesting that just came into my attention. Young Living and doTERRA seem to possess exactly the exact same resource for some of their oils.

Look at these sources and see that Bio Young Aromas is your provider To both businesses.

https://www.seair.co.in/us-import/i-doterra.aspx

http://portexaminer.com/trade-data/bio-young-aromas-co-ltd-young-living-essentials-oils/banqsha5283692/

Not sure what to make of this.

Conclusion

There are some other things about those companies and I could not enter all Of these for various reasons.

When I first wrote this series, doTERRA'd Hardly Any oils if you had been Looking for a company that could be a one stop shop, then it was not really a fantastic option. That has changed somewhat since that time. |}

The two businesses have a large command over the marketplace and there is a lot Of tension between both. I think that it's difficult to say which is best, and of course different aspects of each company continue to change making them both kind of moving targets.

My goal here was not really to say which of them was greatest, but to Discuss Different aspects of each of those"crucial oil powerhouses" in the midst of my hunt for the most effective essential oil company and point out some of my concerns with the two of these.

What do you think?

Do you think you is Far Better than the other or would you rather not utilize Either of these?
