Young Essential|} Oil Products : Young Living or doTERRA ?

Young Living or doTERRA?
This is only one of those big questions out there in the essential oils planet.

It makes sense That Many of people are asking this question, since these Two companies own a massive market share in the industry.

This post is just one in my hunt for the "best" Essential oils firm , and while it is a bit off the beaten path, it is one I thought that I should write.

Admitting When You Are Mistaken

Before we get in the comparison, Allow Me to say that I've had to confess I had been Wrong about things before. |}

-- My believing that Lilla Rose Flexi Clips were a waste of money (see my"I was wrong" Lilla Rose review). |}
-- or saying my Organic Dishwasher Rinse Aid proved to be a great idea.

We have to be prepared to admit we were wrong.

When I started out my trip with essential oils (which I never expected to Go on, by the way--I originally believed that essential oils were a scam), I went with Young Living. Because it worked.

As time wore on, but I was not sure what to think.

Young Living vs. doTERRA {

Remember my enthusiastic posts about their Thieves |} and Peppermint and Wintergreen?

I had been quite excited about the results I had, but as I began writing about Essential oils, I began having some second thoughts. Specifically, one rep from doTERRA began pointing out some things that had me rethinking my decision and wondering if I made the ideal decision or not.

And while I had been doing my exploring, some different things popped up About both Young Living and doTERRA that made me wonder and think much more. About both companies.

It was hard to sort through All the information, but I will lay out Most of it for you so you can see some of the concerns that came into my attention. This isn't everything that I found to be disconcerting, but it is a lot of it. |}

Now I will share what occurred as I looked into the"heavy hitters" In the Essential Oils Industry--

If you've been searching into essential oils in Any Way, chances are you have come across Young Living and doTERRA.

You've for sure heard"Young Living is the best!" |} Or even"doTERRA is your most Pure".

Or something like this.

I touched on some of those issues in the beginning of my Best Essential Oils Collection. But here's more.

Young Living Overview 1. Reputation and Ethics -- |}{

First of all, Young Living was pretty much |} The first on the cube. They literally made essential oils . There is something to be said for this. |}

READ  Best Antidepressant For Anxiety And Depression Uk

But, there are some pretty not-so-savory things online about D. Gary Young. Obviously, the net can be full of truths and lies. However, I still think these things may be worth paying attention to. |} In fact, this info is a lot of what gave me pause when I originally was considering registering with YL. excellent for me personally, but I really did not enjoy what I had been studying. |}

Now, I really do have my worries about Mr. Barrett--mainly that he is basically an "anti-alternative treatment" hound. And I enjoy alternative therapies. Most of them, at least.

I personally am very worried about abuses in the other medical field. But I'm also worried about abuses in Western medicine. |}

My Loved Ones and I have been harmed by the practices of traditional Western Medication (overuse of anti-biotics, over-use of prescriptions meds, physicians misdiagnosing acid reflux, etc.). |} Sometimes, we've been cured regardless of what mainstream doctors told us to do.

understand there are abuses on both sides. |} However, Quackwatch appears to be just Targeting everything option: Chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese medicine....You name it. |} If it's alternative, it is Barrett's target.

{

I could go on and on about his site, but suffice it to say That I'm not |} Sure of all Barrett's offenses against Gary Young. (UPDATE -- All of comments by Mr. Barrett against Gary Young seem to have been eliminated so that I can not cite them any longer.)

But, his writings concerning Young alive and Gary Young abandon something to ponder. Moreso in light of everything else I discovered...

2.

I discovered this interesting entry referring to Young Living OSHA violations. I didn't discover some by another oils firms, although I did not look all of those essential oils firms up, needless to say. That would take a very long time and I could not find them all for sure.

Now, Young Living is your oldest oils company, so they've had more time for There to be offenses, and all the offenses seem to be of the same incident.

Obviously, OSHA violations don't mean that a company is bad. If they Cleaned up their procedures correctly, then their new procedures are better than ever before.

3.

Many A Fantastic amount (upgraded 4/2015) of Young Living's farms can be found in the U.S. I think that's fine for a company being more"in control" of the product, but not good if you follow traditional wisdom that plants grow best (and have the very best therapeutic qualities) when they're grown in their native locations (in which they're supposed to grow naturally).

If you browse through the comments of Best Essential Oils Components 3 & 2 , you will notice that Young Living reps tout that YL farms are in the U.S. as being an advantage--that it provides Young alive control over the whole procedure. Maybe, but other businesses like doTERRA and the majority of the other firms I've looked into have their monies sourced from where the plants grow naturally for higher quality.

4. What Is That Smell? {

You know I like testing things before recommending them to you, like in my:|}

Best {Cinnamon Sugar and
Best Eye Makeup Removerposts. |}

Then you won't be amazed to understand that we did this with essential Oils as well.

{

I bought Young Living, doTERRA, Mountain Rose Herbs, Aura Cacia, and two |} Other companies' oils also did a little"Smell Challenge" with my not-so-specially-trained Smell Testing Panel (a.k.a. my household ). |}

5. Product Claims

{In the literature that I got from Young alive when I signed up, there were Thieves® brochures. |} The Booklet said this study done that apparently addressed the superior therapeutic value of this oil.

I looked up the evaluations on the Internet to see what they had been all about, as I was Curious to observe the exact results and discovered, however, that the study was done on generic Eucalyptus Oil--not on Thieves Oil.

Huh? So it appeared to me that the company was saying that it had been proven Their Thieves® oil was demonstrated to be effective, when what really was that the case was that Eucalyptus, one element of Thieves®, was demonstrated to be effective.

In a sense, that is fine, I suppose. However, I still was confused and decided to email headquarters.

This was their response:

In each instance, Young Living was singled out as with a chemical (synthetic) overtone.

Does that mean there were synthetics added?

Not always naturally, but we still didn't care for it.

6. Country of Origin

As of this 2018 upgrade of the article, all or many of the oils from Young Living don't have a state of origin indicated on the website.

DoTERRA Inspection {

Apart from Purchasing the Young Living Starter Kit, |} I also bought a large kit of doTERRA's oils to test them out against YL. I requested doTERRA repetitions and company employees heaps of questions, and that I even used their oils exclusively for awhile.

One thing that I really enjoy about doTERRA is their instructional resources -- {And also, their oils smell good. |}

However, their great smell a part of what worries me.

One thing I really don't care for is that a Good Deal of doTERRA repetitions (and Corporate workers too ) say something like,"You will understand it works by its smell."

{

This by doTERRA's site:"A 100% pure therapeutic-grade |} Essential oil should have a balanced, broad fragrance profile and ought to odor crystal clean" |} I don't know about you, but I don't understand what"crystal clean" means.

Before I go into more--I said distillation techniques in among my Previous posts. Fundamentally, the moving wisdom about essential oils is that you put the plant parts and water in a distiller and under low pressure and low temperature, you distill the essential oils out of the plant.

They travel down a tube and into a vat--and the steam. |} The oil Collects along with the water and can be eliminated and--voila--you've got essential oils.

The most enviable, and most expensive (and thought to be the most Therapeutic) oil is what can be collected during the first portion of the distillation interval. The resulting oil is called"first dried."

{

This"first distillation" just applies to ylang ylang and possibly |} Peppermint, according to what I have learned. {

1. |} PEPPERMINT {

DoTERRA's peppermint scents |} Good enough to eat--as in"candy cane" good. |}

But that may be a issue. Here's the reason why.

{

Most peppermint essential oils smell like the peppermint you find growing |} Outside in character. Kind of herby and not really like a candy cane.

Candy-cane-smelling peppermint is apparently, according to Several sources, possibly from a redistill. The oils are redistilled or some components are removed to provide the oil a clean pepperminty candy smell.

The other alternative is that someone did something else into the peppermint Oil to decrease the herby smell.

This is exactly what doTERRA's peppermint oils smell like. |} So yummy, In reality, that if you have kiddos in the house, you'd best keep it out of arm's reach.

Here's the response I got from doTERRA saying that their peppermint oil is {a "complete distill":

|}

You can let her know that our Peppermint uses complete
distillation. There is 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and complete and we utilize complete. |} (Source: my email.) |}

So if in fact, the first distillation of peppermint oil would be the most Valuable, then their peppermint oil may not be high quality.

If There's truly no such thing as more than one distillation of peppermint, As many state, then why is doTERRA saying that there is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and total distillation of peppermint? Possibly it was a mistake.

Please note, this whole topic is very confusing and I'm digging into it More and will be adding more info to this series about it or addressing it again in a different article. It is possible to read some information in later posts about why one chemist thinks that doTERRA's peppermint mint smell this manner.

I will add, however, that the most disconcerting thing to me concerning the entire Issue was that I could never get solid info about WHY their peppermint smelled the manner that it did. |}

Report this ad

In one video, one of the founders of doTERRA said that their peppermint Smelled fantastic because it had been from Washington. {Well, other peppermints are from Washington. |}

Next, while exploring the Entire thing, someone else from the company said That it was since it had been distilled just from the leaves and the flowers. I could not get a real response on it. I tried for months and months. It's a really disconcerting situation when I can not get answers to questions like this.

2. YLANG YLANG

promoting at the top of the line quality. |} Their an entire distillation. |} Some may say that this is an issue of taste, but in the essential oils sector, the first distill of ylang ylang is more appreciated and consequently, a more costly oil. To their credit, doTERRA will phone their ylang ylang an entire distill on their site.

Ylang Ylang first distill (which can be referred to as"extra") is generally Regarded as the quality of oil that's most sought after / of greatest therapeutic quality--not the complete distillation.

3. TERRASHIELD {

Thanks to Kitchen Stewardship, I |} Recognized that doTERRA doesn't disclose all the oils within this bug repellant blend. I'll say that we have used this to cure after sting itching (along with my son enjoys it), but I think that not including ingredients on a tag isn't preferable. (UPDATE -- doTERRA now discloses the ingredients of the Terra Shield mix. I'm happy they're doing this.)

What I think is troubling is that doTERRA Produces a lot of claims About their oils being the very best --high quality. And their costs sure reflect that. I don't think I would buy whole, 2nd or 3rd distillation oil for over other organizations are selling 1st distill for--do you?

UPDATE 4/16: I will be upgrading this distillation information.

Obviously, there are additional things to think about--purity, etc.. So we'll Keep the conversation going and touch on other companies as well.

If not--request.

Thank you for your patience! |} This has been a long road, but I promise, we |} Are nearing the end.

4. FRANKINCENSE

This isn't always a negative, but thought I must point it out since Frankincense is such a favorite essential oil nowadays.

Most firms sell just one number of Frankincense Oil, or several Varieties, but doTERRA's Frankincense is, at least as of this date I'm writing this accession to this article (Aug 2016), a mix of different varieties (origin ):

-- carterii (typically the least expensive)
{-- serrata
-- frereana

5. |} No Organic Certification

Among the things that bugs me about doTERRA is that they don't have some certified organic oils. What I have discovered is that it is too hard for them to get that certification from all the states that they source from. Emily Wright says:

The reason for this is since we source from so many developing countries. The certification requirements and accessibility differs from nation to nation. Some states don't even have a certification offering.

I do it. It can be hard. But they can source some or many of them Organically if they wanted to. At least I see other companies doing it. Perhaps I'm wrong, but that's the way it appears to me. I've looked into organic certification before and it was not as pricey as most companies (those without certificate ) make it out to be.

6. Country of Origin

As of this 2018 upgrade of the article, all or many of the oils from doTERRA do Not have a state of origin indicated on the website. This can be interesting especially since the company and/or its representatives repeatedly state that they can not get organic certification due to it being hard to get it in the states where their monies are sourced.

I heard from a reader that there is source map to get doTERRA oils, but I could not find it. {I did find one page that shows sourcing for Spikenard and Petitgrain. |} It shows that the Petitgrain Oil is derived from Paraguay. Other firms have organic Petitgrain from Paraguay so I would be interested in hearing their oils are from to see if their claim about organic being something they can not do would be not.

Same Resource for Oils?

2018 Update: Here is something interesting that just came into my attention. Young alive and doTERRA seem to have exactly the same resource for some of their own oils.

Look at these sources and see that Bio Young Aromas is your supplier To both companies.

https://www.seair.co.in/us-import/i-doterra.aspx

http://portexaminer.com/trade-data/bio-young-aromas-co-ltd-young-living-essentials-oils/banqsha5283692/

Not sure what to make of the.

Conclusion

There are some other things about those firms and I could not go into all Of these for various reasons.

When I wrote this series, doTERRA had very few oils so if you were Looking for a business which could be a one stop shop, then it was not really a great alternative. That's changed somewhat since that time. |}

Both companies have a large command over the marketplace and There's a lot Of tension between both. I think that it's difficult to say which is best, and obviously different aspects of each company continue to alter which makes them both kind of moving targets.

My goal here was not really to say which of them was greatest, but to Discuss Various aspects of each of those"crucial oil powerhouses" in the midst of my hunt for the best essential oil company and point out some of my concerns with the two of these.

What do you think?

Do you think you is better than the other or do you rather not utilize Either of these?
