Young Essential|} Oil Products : Young Living or doTERRA ?

Young Living or doTERRA?
This is one of the big questions out there from the essential oils world.

It makes sense that a lot of people are asking this question, because those Two companies own a huge market share in the business.

This post is one in my hunt to find the "finest" Essential oils firm , and while it is somewhat off the beaten path, it is one I thought that I should write.

Admitting When You Are Wrong

Before we get in the comparison, let me say that I have had to admit I was Wrong about things before. |}

-- My thinking which Lilla Rose Flexi Clips were a waste of money (see my"I was wrong" Lilla Rose inspection ). |}
-- or stating my Natural Dishwasher Rinse Aid was a fantastic idea.

We have to be willing to admit we're wrong.

When I began my trip using essential oils (that I never expected to Proceed, incidentally --I originally believed that essential oils were a scam), I moved with Young Living. Since it worked.

As time wore on, but I was not certain what to think.

Young Living vs. doTERRA {

Remember my passionate posts about their Thieves |}

I had been pretty excited about the results I'd had, but since I began writing about Essential oils, I began having some second thoughts. Specifically, 1 rep from doTERRA began pointing out a few matters that had me rethinking my decision and wondering when I made the ideal decision or not.

And while I had been doing my exploring, a few different things popped up About both Youthful Living and doTERRA which made me wonder and think much more. About both businesses.

It was hard to sort through all of the information, but I'm going to lay out Most of it for you here so you can view a few of the concerns which came into my attention. is not everything that I found to be disconcerting, but it is a lot of it. |}

Today I'm going to discuss what occurred as I looked into the"heavy hitters" In the Essential Oils Industry--

If you have been looking into essential oils in Any Way, chances are you have come across Young Living and doTERRA.

You've for sure heard"Young Living is the best!" |} Or even"doTERRA is your most Pure".

Or something like this.

I touched on a few of those issues in the Start of my Best Essential Oils series. But here is more.

Young Living Overview 1. Standing and Ethics -- |}{

First of all, Young Living was fairly much |} The very first on the block. They made essential oils mainstream. There's something to be said for this. |}

But, there are a number of fairly not-so-savory items on the internet about D. Gary Young. Obviously, the net can be filled with truths and lies. However, I still think these things may be worth paying attention to. |} Actually, this information is a whole lot of what gave me pause when I originally was considering signing up with YL. I mean, the Thieves Oil worked great for me personally, but I actually didn't enjoy what I was reading. |}

READ  Young Living Oils For Stress Fractures

I really do have my worries about Mr. Barrett--mainly that he is basically an "anti-alternative therapy" hound. And I enjoy alternative therapies. The majority of them, at least.

I personally am very worried about abuses in the other medical field. But I'm also worried about abuses in Western medicine. |}

My family and I have been hurt by the practices of traditional Western Medicine (overuse of anti-biotics, over-use of prescriptions meds, doctors misdiagnosing acid reflux, etc.). |} In some cases, we've been cured regardless of what mainstream physicians told us to do.

I know there are abuses on both sides. |} However, Quackwatch appears to be just Targeting everything option: Chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese medicine....You name it. |} If it's alternative, it is Barrett's goal.

{

I really could go on and on about his Website, but suffice it to say that I am not |} Sure of all Barrett's offenses against Gary Young. (UPDATE -- All comments by Mr. Barrett against Gary Young seem to have been eliminated so that I can't mention them no more.)

But, his writings concerning Young Living and Gary Young leave something to ponder. Moreso in light of everything else I found...

2. OSHA Violations --

I found this interesting entry speaking to Young Living OSHA violations. I didn't find some by the other oils firms, although I didn't look all of the essential oils firms up, needless to say. That would take a long long time and I could not find them for sure.

Now, Young Living is your earliest oils company, so they have had more time for There to be offenses, and each the offenses seem to be of the exact same incident.

Obviously, OSHA violations do not indicate that a company is bad. If they Cleaned up their procedures correctly, then possibly their new procedures are better than ever.

3.

Many A Fantastic number (upgraded 4/2015) of Young Living's farms can be found in the U.S. I feel that's fine for a business being more"in control" of their product, but not great if you follow conventional wisdom that plants grow best (and have the very best therapeutic qualities) if they are grown in their indigenous locations (in which they are supposed to grow naturally).

If you read through the remarks of Best Essential Oils Components 2 & 3, you'll see that Young Living repetitions tout the fact that YL farms have been from the U.S. as being an advantage--that it gives Young Living control over the whole process. Perhaps, but other businesses like doTERRA and most of the other firms I have looked into have their monies sourced from wherever the plants grow naturally for higher quality.

4. What's That Smell? {

You know I like testing things before recommending them to you, like in my:|}

Best {Cinnamon Sugar and
Best Eye Makeup Removerposts. |}

Then you won't be amazed to know that people did so with essential Oils as well.

{

I bought Young Living, doTERRA, Mountain Rose Herbs, Aura Cacia, and 2 |} Other firms' oils also did a little"Smell Challenge" with my not-so-specially-trained Smell Testing Panel (a.k.a. my household ). |}

5. Product Claims

{In the literature which I obtained from Young Living when I signed up, there were Thieves® brochures. |} The Brochure mentioned this study done that apparently addressed the superior therapeutic value of this oil.

I hunted up the tests on the Internet to see what they had been about, because I was Curious to see the specific effects and found, however, that the study was done on generic Eucalyptus Oil--not on Thieves Oil.

Huh? So it appeared to me that the company was stating that it had been proven Their Thieves® petroleum was proven to work, when what really was the case was that Eucalyptus, 1 element of Thieves®, was proven to work.

In a feeling, that is fine, I suppose. However, I still was confused and chose to email headquarters.

This was their answer:

THE SMELL CHALLENGE: |}

We had a blind odor test of 3-5 manufacturers of the same oil.

In every instance, Young Living was singled out as with a chemical (artificial ) overtone.

Does that mean there were synthetics added?

Not necessarily naturally, but we still didn't care for this.

6. Country of Origin

As of this 2018 update of the post, all or many of the oils from Young Living don't have a state of origin indicated on the site.

DoTERRA Inspection {

Besides Purchasing the Young Living Starter Kit, |} I also bought a big kit of doTERRA's oils to test them out against YL. I asked doTERRA reps and corporate employees tons of questions, and that I even used their oils exclusively for awhile.

One thing that I really enjoy about doTERRA is their instructional tools -- {And also, their oils smell great. |}

However, their great smell a part of what worries me.

One thing I Truly don't care for is that a Good Deal of doTERRA reps (and Corporate employees too ) say something like,"You will know it works by its odor."

{

This from doTERRA's website:"A 100% pure therapeutic-grade |} Essential oil should have a balanced, broad fragrance profile and should odor crystal clean." |} I don't know about you, but I do not know what"crystal clean" means.

Before I enter more--I said distillation techniques in among my Previous posts. Fundamentally, the going wisdom of essential oils is that you put the plant parts and water in a distiller and under low pressure and low temperatures, you distill the essential oils out of the plant.

traveling down a tube and into a vat--and the steam. |} The oil Collects along with the water and can be eliminated and--voila--you've got essential oils.

The most coveted, and many expensive (and thought to be the most Therapeutic) oil is what can be collected during the first portion of the distillation period. The resulting oil is called"first distilled."

{

This"first distillation" just applies to ylang ylang and possibly |} Peppermint, according to what I've learned. {

1. |} PEPPERMINT {

DoTERRA's peppermint scents |} great. |}

But that may be a problem. Here's why.

{

Most peppermint essential oils smell like the peppermint you find growing |} Out in character. Kind of herby rather than really like a candy cane.

Candy-cane-smelling peppermint seems to be according to Several resources, maybe from a redistill. The oils are redistilled or some elements are taken out to give the oil a sterile pepperminty candy odor.

Another alternative is that somebody did something else into the peppermint Oil to decrease the herby odor.

just what doTERRA's peppermint oils smell like. |} So yummy, In fact, that if you have kiddos in the house, you'd best keep it out of arm's reach.

Here's the answer I got from doTERRA saying that their peppermint oil is. {a "complete distill":

|}

You can let her know that our Peppermint utilizes complete
distillation. There's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and finish and we utilize complete. |} Supply: my email.) |}

So if in Actuality, the very first distillation of peppermint oil is the most Valuable, then their peppermint oil may not be top quality.

If There's no such thing as more than 1 distillation of peppermint, As many state, then why's doTERRA saying that there is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and complete distillation of peppermint? Maybe it was an error.

Please notethis whole subject Is Quite confusing and I am digging into it More and will be adding more information to this show about it or addressing it in another post. It is possible to read some information in later posts about why one chemist believes that doTERRA's peppermint mint smell this way.

I will add, however, that the most disconcerting thing to me concerning the entire Difficulty was that I could never find solid information about WHY their peppermint smelled the way that it did. |}

Report this ad

In 1 video, one of the creators of doTERRA said that their peppermint Smelled fantastic because it had been from Washington. {Well, other peppermints are from Washington. |}

Next, while exploring the whole thing, somebody else in the company said That it was because it had been distilled just from the leaves and the blossoms. I could not get a real answer on it. I tried for months and months. It's a really disconcerting situation when I can't get answers to questions such as this.

2.

promoting the top of the line quality. |} Their Ylang ylang, however, is also a complete distillation. |} Some may say that this is an issue of taste, but in the essential oils sector, the very first loaf of ylang ylang is more valued and therefore, a higher priced oil. To their credit, doTERRA does phone their ylang ylang an entire distill on their website.

Ylang Ylang first distill (that can be Known as"extra") is generally Regarded as the quality of petroleum that's most sought after / of highest curative quality--not the comprehensive distillation.

3. TERRASHIELD {

Due to Kitchen Stewardship, I |} Recognized that doTERRA does not disclose all the oils in this insect repellant blend. I'll say that we have used this to treat after bite itching (along with my son likes it), however I think that not adding ingredients on a label isn't preferable. (UPDATE -- doTERRA now discloses the components of their Terra Shield blend. I'm glad they are doing this.)

What I think is troubling here is that doTERRA Produces a Whole Lot of claims About their oils being the very best --top quality. And their costs convinced reflect that. I do not think I'd buy whole, 2nd or even 3rd distillation oil for over other organizations are selling 1st distill for--do you?

UPDATE 4/16: I'm updating this distillation information.

Obviously, there are additional things to think about--purity, etc.. So we will Keep the dialog going and touch on different businesses too.

Otherwise --ask away.

Thanks for your patience! |} It has been a long road, but I promise, we |} Are nearing the end.

4. FRANKINCENSE

This is not necessarily a negative, but thought I must point out it since Frankincense is such a favorite essential oil these days.

Most firms sell just 1 number of Frankincense Oil, or even several Varieties, however doTERRA's Frankincense is, at least as of this date I am writing this accession to this post (Aug 2016), a blend of different varieties (source):

-- carterii (generally the least expensive)
{-- serrata
-- frereana

5. |} No Organic Certification

One of the things that bugs me about doTERRA is that they don't have any certified organic oils. What I have discovered is that it is too hard for them to find that certification from all the countries that they source from. Emily Wright says:

The cause of this is because we supply from so many developing countries. The certification requirements and accessibility differs from nation to nation. Some countries do not even have a certification offering.

I do it. It can be hard. However they could source a few or many of these Organically if they desired to. At least I see other companies doing this. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's the way it seems to me. I have looked into organic certification before and it was not as pricey as most companies (those without certification) make it out to be.

6. Country of Origin

As of this 2018 update of the post, all or many of the oils from doTERRA do Not have a state of origin indicated on the site. This can be interesting especially because the organization and/or its representatives repeatedly state that they can't get organic certification due to it being hard to get it from the countries where their oils have been sourced.

I heard from a reader that there is source map for doTERRA oils, however I could not find it. {I did find one page that shows sourcing for Spikenard and Petitgrain. |} It demonstrates that the Petitgrain Oil is sourced from Paraguay. Other firms have organic Petitgrain from Paraguay so I'd be interested in hearing their oils are out to see if their claim about natural being something they can't do is reasonable or not.

Same Resource for Oils?

2018 Update: Here is something interesting that only came into my attention. Young Living and doTERRA seem to possess the same resource for a number of their oils.

Examine these sources and see that Bio Young Aromas is your supplier To both businesses.

https://www.seair.co.in/us-import/i-doterra.aspx

http://portexaminer.com/trade-data/bio-young-aromas-co-ltd-young-living-essentials-oils/banqsha5283692/

Not certain what to make of the.

Conclusion

There are some other things about those firms and I could not enter all Of them for various reasons.

When I wrote this particular series, doTERRA had Hardly Any oils so if you were Looking for a business which could be a 1 stop shop, then it was not really a fantastic alternative. That has changed somewhat since that time. |}

The two businesses have a big command over the marketplace and There's a lot Of tension between the two. I think that it's hard to say which is best, and of course different facets of each business continue to alter which makes them both kind of moving goals.

My goal here was not really to say that of these was best, but to Discuss Various facets of each of those"essential oil powerhouses" in the midst of my hunt for the best essential oil business and point out a number of my worries with both of them.

What do you think?

Do you think one is better than the other or do you rather not work with Either of them?
