Young Essential|}

Young Living or doTERRA?
This is only one of those big questions out there in the vital oils planet.

It makes sense that a lot of people are asking this question, since those Two companies own a massive market share in the industry.

This post is one in my hunt to find the "best" Essential oils company, and while it's a bit off the beaten path, it's one I thought that I should write.

Admitting when You're Mistaken

Before we get into the comparison, let me say that I've had to admit I was Wrong about things before. |}

-- My believing which Lilla have been a waste of money (see my"I was wrong" Lilla Rose review). |}
-- or saying my Natural Dishwasher Rinse Aid proved to be a great idea.

We need to be prepared to admit we're wrong.

When I started out my journey using essential oils (that I never expected to Go on, by the way--I originally thought that essential oils turned into a scam), I went with Young Living. Because it worked.

As time wore on, however, I was not sure what to think.

{

Remember my enthusiastic posts about their Thieves |}

I had been pretty excited about the results I'd had, but since I started writing about Essential oils, I started having some second thoughts. In particular, one rep from doTERRA started pointing out some matters that had me rethinking my choice and wondering when I made the ideal choice or not.

And while I had been doing my exploring, some different things popped up About both Youthful Living and doTERRA which made me wonder and think much more. About both companies.

It was difficult to sort through All the information, but I will lay out Most of it for you so you can view some of the concerns which came to my attention. This isn't everything that I found to be disconcerting, but it's a good deal of it. |}

Today I will discuss what occurred as I looked to the"heavy hitters" In the crucial Oils Industry--

If you've been looking into essential oils at all, chances are you have come

You have for sure heard"Young Living is the best!" |} Or even"doTERRA is your most Pure".

Or something like this.

I touched on some of these issues in the Start of my Best Essential Oils series. But here is more.

Young Living Review 1. Standing and Ethics -- |}{

First of all, Young Living was pretty much |} The very first on the block. They literally made essential oils mainstream. There's something to be said for this. |}

But, there are some pretty not-so-savory things online about D. Gary Young. Obviously, the internet can be full of lies and truths. But I still think these things may be worth paying attention to. |} Dr. Stephen Barrett has written a load of unsavory things about D. Gary Young. Actually, this information is a lot of what gave me pause when I originally was looking into signing up with YL. I mean, the Thieves Oil worked great for me personally, but I really didn't enjoy what I was reading. |}

READ  Bipolar 1 Treatment Options

Now, I really do have my concerns about Mr. Barrett--mainly that he is essentially an "anti-alternative therapy" hound. And I enjoy alternative therapies. The majority of them, at least.

I personally am very concerned about abuses at the alternative medical field. I am also concerned about abuses in Western medicine. |}

My family and I have been hurt by the practices of Classic Western Medicine (overuse of anti-biotics, over-use of prescriptions meds, physicians misdiagnosing acid reflux, etc.). |} In some cases, we have been cured regardless of what mainstream physicians told us to perform.

I know there are abuses on both sides. |} However, Quackwatch seems to be just Targeting everything alternative: Chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese medicine....You title it. |} When it's alternative, it's Barrett's goal.

{

I really could go on and on about his Website, but suffice it to say that I am not |} Sure of all of Barrett's accusations from Gary Young. (UPDATE -- All of remarks by Mr. Barrett from Gary Young seem to have been eliminated so that I can not mention them no more.)

But, his writings concerning Young Living and Gary Young leave something to ponder. Moreso in light of everything else I discovered...

2. OSHA Violations --

I discovered this interesting entry speaking to Young Living OSHA violations. I didn't find any by the other oils firms, although I didn't look all of of those vital oils firms up, needless to say. That would take a long long time and I couldn't locate them for sure.

Now, Young Living is your earliest oils firm, so they've had more time for There to be violations, and all of the violations seem to be of the exact same incident.

Obviously, OSHA violations don't indicate that a provider is bad. If they Cleaned up their procedures properly, then their new procedures are better than ever.

3.

Many A good amount (upgraded 4/2015) of Young Living's farms are located in the U.S. I feel that is fine for a business being more"in control" of the merchandise, but not great if you follow conventional wisdom that crops grow best (and have the best therapeutic qualities) if they are grown in their native locations (where they are supposed to grow naturally).

If you browse through the remarks of Best Essential Oils Components 3 & 2 , you will notice that Young Living reps tout that YL farms are in the U.S. as being an edge --that it provides Young Living control over the whole procedure. Maybe, but other businesses like doTERRA and the majority of the other firms I've looked to have their monies sourced from where the crops grow naturally for higher quality.

4. What's That Smell? {

You know I like testing things before recommending them to you, like in my:|}

Best {Cinnamon Sugar and
Best Eye Makeup Removerarticles. |}

You then won't be surprised to know that people did this with essential Oils as well.

{

I bought Young Living, doTERRA, Mountain Rose Herbs, Aura Cacia, and 2 |} Other firms' oils and did a little"Smell Challenge" with my not-so-specially-trained Smell Testing Panel (a.k.a. my household ). |}

5. Product Claims

{In the literature which I got from Young Living when I signed up, there were Thieves® brochures. |} The Booklet said this research done that apparently addressed the superior therapeutic value of this oil.

I looked up the tests on the Internet to see what they had been about, as I was Curious to see the exact effects and discovered, however, that the analysis was done on generic Eucalyptus Oil--maybe not on Thieves Oil.

Huh? So it appeared to me that the company was saying that it had been proven That their Thieves® petroleum was proven to work, when what really was the case was that Eucalyptus, one element of Thieves®, was proven to work.

In a sense, that's fine, I suppose. However, I still was confused and decided to email headquarters.

This was their answer:

THE SMELL CHALLENGE: |}

We had a blind odor test of 3-5 brands of the identical oil.

In each instance, Young Living was singled out as having a chemical (artificial ) overtone.

Does that mean there were synthetics added?

Not necessarily of course, but we still didn't care for it.

6. Country of Origin

As of this 2018 update of this article, all or Lots of the oils from Young Living do not have a country of source indicated on the site.

DoTERRA Inspection {

Apart from buying the Young Living Starter Kit, |} I also purchased a big kit of doTERRA's oils to try them out from YL. I requested doTERRA repetitions and corporate workers heaps of questions, and that I used their oils solely for awhile.

1 thing that I really enjoy about doTERRA is their instructional resources -- {And also, their oils smell great. |}

However, their great smell is part of what concerns me.

1 thing I Truly don't care for is that a lot of doTERRA repetitions (and Corporate employees as well) say something like,"You will know it works by its odor."

{

This from doTERRA's website:"A 100% pure therapeutic-grade |} Essential oil should have a balanced, broad fragrance profile and should odor crystal clean" |} I don't know about you, but I don't know what"crystal clean" means.

Before I enter more--I mentioned distillation techniques in among my own Previous articles. Basically, the going wisdom of essential oils is that you put the plant components and water at a distiller and under reduced pressure and low temperatures, you distill the vital oils out of the plant.

traveling down a tube and into a vat--along with the steam. |} The oil Collects on top of the water and can be eliminated and--voila--you have essential oils.

The most coveted, and many expensive (and thought to be the most Therapeutic) oil is what can be accumulated during the first part of the distillation interval. The resulting oil is known as"first distilled."

{

This"first distillation" just applies to ylang ylang and possibly |} Peppermint, based on what I've learned. {

1. |} PEPPERMINT {

DoTERRA's peppermint smells |} great. |}

But that may be a problem. Here's the reason why.

{

Most peppermint essential oils smell like the peppermint you locate growing |} Out in nature. Kind of herby and not really like a candy cane.

Candy-cane-smelling peppermint is apparently, according to Several resources, maybe from a redistill. The oils are redistilled or some components are removed to provide the oil a sterile pepperminty candy odor.

Another choice is that someone did something else to the peppermint Petroleum to decrease the herby odor.

just what doTERRA's peppermint oils smell like. |} So yummy, In fact, that if you have kiddos at the home, you'd best keep it out of arm's reach.

Here is the answer I got from doTERRA saying that their olive oil is. {a "complete distill":

|}

You can let her know that our Peppermint utilizes complete
distillation. There is 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and finish and we utilize complete. |} (Source: my email.) |}

So if in fact, the very first distillation of peppermint oil is the most Valuable, then their olive oil may not be high quality.

If There's truly no such thing as more than one preservative of peppermint, As many say, then why is doTERRA saying that there is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and total purification of peppermint? Maybe it was a mistake.

Please note, this whole topic is very confusing and I am digging into it More and will be adding more information to this show about it or addressing it in a different article. It is possible to read some information in later articles about why one chemist thinks that doTERRA's peppermint mint smell this way.

I will add, however, that the most disconcerting thing to me concerning the whole Issue was that I could never get solid information regarding WHY their peppermint smelled the way that it did. |}

Report this ad

In one movie, one of the creators of doTERRA said that their peppermint Smelled amazing because it had been from Washington. {Well, other peppermints are from Washington. |}

Next, while exploring the Entire thing, someone else from the company said It was since it had been distilled just from the leaves and the blossoms. I couldn't get a real answer on it. I tried for weeks and months. It's a very disconcerting situation when I can not get answers to questions such as this.

2.

promoting the top of the line quality. |} Their Ylang ylang, however, is also a complete distillation. |} Some can say that this is a matter of taste, but at the vital oils sector, the first distill of ylang ylang is more appreciated and therefore, a higher priced oil. To their credit, doTERRA will phone their ylang ylang a complete distill on their website.

Ylang Ylang first distill (that can be referred to as"additional") is generally Regarded as the quality of petroleum that is most sought after / of highest curative quality--maybe not the comprehensive distillation.

3. TERRASHIELD {

Due to Kitchen Stewardship, I |} Realized that doTERRA doesn't disclose all of the oils in this insect repellant blend. I'll say that we've used this to cure after bite itching (and my son enjoys it), but I believe that not adding ingredients on a tag is not preferable. (UPDATE -- doTERRA currently exposes the ingredients of the Terra Shield mix. I am glad they are doing this.)

What I believe is troubling is that doTERRA makes a lot of claims About their oils being the best--high quality. And their costs convinced reflect that. I don't believe I'd purchase complete, 2nd or 3rd distillation oil for more than other organizations are selling 1st distill for--do you?

UPDATE 4/16: I'm updating this distillation information.

Obviously, there are other things to think about--purity, etc.. So we'll Keep the conversation going and touch on other companies too.

I hope this all makes sense. If not--request.

Thanks for your patience! |} It has been a long road, but I guarantee, we |} Are nearing the finish.

4. FRANKINCENSE

This is not necessarily a negative, but thought I should point it out because Frankincense is this a popular essential oil nowadays.

Most firms sell just one number of Frankincense Oil, or several Varieties, but doTERRA's Frankincense is, at least as of this date I am writing this accession to this article (Aug 2016), a mix of different varieties (source):

-- carterii (typically the least expensive)
{-- serrata
-- frereana

5. |} No Organic Certification

One of the things that bugs me about doTERRA is that they don't have some What I have discovered is that it's too difficult for them to get that certification from each one of the countries that they source from. Emily Wright says:

The cause of this is since we source from numerous developing nations. The certification requirements and availability differs from nation to nation. Some countries don't even have a certification offering.

I do it. It can be difficult. However they can source some or many of these Organically if they wanted to. I see other companies doing it. Perhaps I am wrong, but that is the way it seems to me. I've looked into organic certification before and it was not as expensive as most companies (those without certification) make it out to be.

6. Country of Origin

As of this 2018 update of this article, all or Lots of the oils from doTERRA do Not have a country of source indicated on the site. This can be interesting especially because the company and/or its reps repeatedly say that they can not get organic certification due to it being difficult to get it in the countries where their oils are sourced.

I heard from a reader That There's source map for doTERRA oils, but I could not find it. {I did locate one page that shows sourcing for Spikenard and Petitgrain. |} It demonstrates that the Petitgrain Oil is sourced from Paraguay. Other firms have organic Petitgrain from Paraguay so I'd be interested in hearing where their other oils are out to see whether their claim about natural being something that they can not do is not.

Same Source for Oils?

2018 Update: Here is something interesting that only came to my attention. Young Living and doTERRA seem to possess exactly the same source for some of their oils.

Examine the following sources and see that Bio Young Aromas is your provider To both companies.

https://www.seair.co.in/us-import/i-doterra.aspx

http://portexaminer.com/trade-data/bio-young-aromas-co-ltd-young-living-essentials-oils/banqsha5283692/

Not sure what to make of this.

Conclusion

There are some other things about these firms and I couldn't enter all Of these for a variety of reasons.

When I first wrote this particular series, doTERRA'd very few oils so if you were On the lookout for a company that could be a one stop shop, then it was not really a great option. That has changed somewhat since that time. |}

Both companies have a large command over the Market and There's a lot Of tension between the two. I believe that it's difficult to say which is best, and obviously different facets of each business continue to alter making them both kind of moving goals.

My goal here was not really to say that of them was best, but to Discuss Various facets of each of these"essential oil powerhouses" in the middle of my hunt for the best essential oil business and point out some of my concerns with the two of these.

What do you believe?

Do you think you is Far Better than the other or do you rather not utilize Either of these?
