Young Essential|} Oil Products : Young Living or doTERRA ?

Young Living or doTERRA?
This is only one of those big questions out there from the vital oils planet.

It makes sense that a lot of Individuals are asking this question, since those Two companies possess a massive market share in the industry.

This post is just one in my search to find the "finest" Essential oils company, and while it is a bit off the beaten path, it is one I thought that I should write.

Admitting When You Are Wrong

Before we get in the comparison, let me say that I've had to confess I was Wrong about things before. |}

-- My believing that Lilla Rose Flexi Clips were a waste of money (see my"I was wrong" Lilla Rose review). |}
-- or saying my Natural Dishwasher Rinse Aid was a great idea.

We need to be prepared to admit we're wrong.

When I began my trip with essential oils (which I never anticipated to Proceed, incidentally --I initially believed that essential oils were a scam), I went with Young Living. Since it worked.

As time wore on, however, I was not certain what to think.

{

Remember my passionate posts about their Thieves |}

I had been pretty excited about the results I'd had, but since I started writing about Essential oils, I started having some second thoughts. In particular, one rep from doTERRA started pointing out a few matters that had me rethinking my choice and wondering when I made the right choice or not.

And while I had been doing my investigating, a few different things popped up About both Youthful Living and doTERRA that made me think and wonder much more. About both companies.

It was difficult to sort through All the information, but I will lay out Most of it for you here so you can view a few of the concerns that came to my attention. This isn't everything that I found to be disconcerting, but it is a lot of it. |}

Now I will discuss what occurred as I looked to the"heavy hitters" From the Essential Oils Industry--

If you've been looking into essential oils in Any Way, Odds Are you have come across Young Living and doTERRA.

You have for sure heard"Young Living is the best!" |} Or"doTERRA is the most Pure".

Or something like this.

I touched on a few of these issues in the beginning of my Greatest Essential Oils series. But here is more.

Young Living Overview 1. Standing and Ethics -- |}{

First of all, Young Living was fairly much |} The first on the block. They made essential oils mainstream. There's something to be said for this. |}

But, there are some fairly not-so-savory things online about D. Gary Young. Obviously, the net can be filled with truths and lies. But I still think these things might be worth paying attention to. |} Actually, this info is a lot of what gave me pause when I initially was considering registering with YL. excellent for me, but I actually did not like what I was studying. |}

READ  Over The Counter Anxiety Medication Amazon

I do have my concerns about Mr. Barrett--mainly that he's essentially an "anti-alternative therapy" hound. And I like alternative therapies. Most of them, at least.

I am very worried about abuses at the alternative medical field. But I'm also worried about abuses in Western medicine. |}

My Loved Ones and I have been harmed by the practices of Classic Western Medication (overuse of anti-biotics, over-use of prescriptions meds, doctors misdiagnosing acid reflux, etc.). |} In some cases, we've been cured regardless of what mainstream physicians told us to perform.

I know there are abuses on both sides. |} However, Quackwatch seems to be just Targeting everything alternative: Chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese medicine....You name it. |} When it's alternative, it is Barrett's target.

{

I really could go on and on about his Website, but suffice it to say That I'm not |} Sure of all Barrett's offenses against Gary Young. (UPDATE -- All comments by Mr. Barrett against Gary Young appear to have been removed so that I can't cite them no more.)

But, his writings about Young alive and Gary Young abandon something to ponder. Moreso in light of what else I found...

2.

I found this interesting entry referring to Young Living OSHA offenses . I didn't discover some by the other oils companies, although I did not look all of those vital oils companies up, of course. This would take a long time and I couldn't locate them all for sure.

Now, Young Living is the earliest oils firm, so they have had more time for There to be offenses, and each the offenses appear to be of the exact same incident.

Obviously, OSHA violations do not mean a company is bad. If they Cleaned up their procedures properly, then possibly their new procedures are better than ever before.

3.

Many A good amount (updated 4/2015) of Young Living's farms are located in the U.S. I feel that's fine for a business being more"in control" of their product, but not good if you follow traditional wisdom that crops grow best (and have the very best therapeutic qualities) if they are grown in their native locations (where they are supposed to grow naturally).

If you read through the remarks of Greatest Essential Oils Parts 3 & 2 , you'll notice that Young Living repetitions tout the fact that YL farms are from the U.S. as being an advantage--that it provides Young alive control over the entire procedure. Perhaps, but other companies like doTERRA and most of the other companies I've looked to have their monies sourced from where the crops grow naturally for higher quality.

4. What's That Smell? {

You know I like testing things before recommending them to you, like in myown: |}

Greatest {Cinnamon Sugar and
Greatest Eye Makeup Removerarticles. |}

Then you won't be amazed to know that people did so with essential Oils also.

{

I purchased Young Living, doTERRA, Mountain Rose Herbs, Aura Cacia, and two |} Other companies' oils and did a little"Smell Challenge" with my not-so-specially-trained Smell Testing Panel (a.k.a. my household ). |}

5. Product Claims

{From the literature that I got from Young alive when I signed up, there were Thieves® brochures. |} The Booklet said this research done that seemingly addressed the superior therapeutic value of this oil.

I hunted up the tests online to see what they had been all about, as I was Curious to see the specific effects and found, however, the study was done on generic Eucalyptus Oil--maybe not to Thieves Oil.

Huh? So it seemed to me the company was saying that it had been proven Their Thieves® oil was demonstrated to work, when what really was that the case was that Eucalyptus, one component of Thieves®, was demonstrated to work.

In a sense, that's fine, I suppose. However, I still was confused and chose to email headquarters.

This was their response:

THE SMELL CHALLENGE: |}

We needed a blind smell test of 3-5 brands of the same oil.

In every case, Young Living has been singled out as having a compound (artificial ) overtone.

READ  Postpartum Depression Over The Counter Treatment

Does that mean there were synthetics added?

Not always naturally, but we still didn't care for this.

6. Country of Origin

As of this 2018 upgrade of this article, all or many of the oils from Young Living do not have a country of origin indicated on the site.

DoTERRA Review {

Besides Purchasing the Young Living Starter Kit, |} I also purchased a big kit of doTERRA's oils to try them out against YL. I asked doTERRA repetitions and company employees heaps of questions, and that I even used their oils solely for awhile.

1 thing that I really like about doTERRA is their educational tools -- {And also, their oils smell good. |}

However, their great smell is part of what concerns me.

1 thing I Truly don't care for is that a Good Deal of doTERRA repetitions (and Corporate workers too ) say something like,"You'll know it works by its own smell."

{

This from doTERRA's site:"A 100% pure therapeutic-grade |} needs to have a balanced, broad fragrance profile and should odor crystal clear ." |} I don't know about you, but I do not know what"crystal clean" means.

Before I go into more--I said distillation techniques in among my Previous articles. Basically, the going wisdom of essential oils is that you set the plant components and water at a distiller and under low pressure and low temperatures, you distill the vital oils out of the plant.

traveling down a tube and into a vat--and the steam. |} The petroleum Collects on top of the water and is removed and--voila--you've got essential oils.

The most enviable, and many expensive (and thought to be the most Curative ) oil is that which is collected during the first portion of the distillation period. The resulting oil is called"first distilled."

{

This"first distillation" just applies to ylang ylang and maybe |} Peppermint, based on what I've learned. {

1. |} PEPPERMINT {

DoTERRA's peppermint smells |} great. |}

But that might be a issue. Here's why.

{

Most peppermint essential oils smell like the peppermint you locate growing |} Outside in nature. Kind of herby and not really like a candy cane.

Candy-cane-smelling peppermint seems to be according to Several sources, possibly from a redistill. The oils are either redistilled or some elements are taken out to give the oil a clean pepperminty candy smell. (Source).

Another alternative is that someone did something else to the peppermint Petroleum to decrease the herby smell.

This is exactly what doTERRA's peppermint oils smell like. |} So yummy, In reality, that in case you have kiddos at the house, you'd best keep it out of arm's reach.

Here is the response I got from doTERRA saying that their peppermint oil is. {a "complete distill":

|}

You can let her know our Peppermint uses complete
distillation. There is 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and complete and we use complete. |} (Source: my email.) |}

So if in fact, the first distillation of peppermint oil would be the most Valuable, then their peppermint oil might not be top quality.

If there is no such thing as more than one distillation of peppermint, As many say, then why's doTERRA saying there is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and complete purification of peppermint? Maybe it was an error.

Please note, this entire subject Is Quite confusing and I am digging into it More and am going to be adding more info to this show about it or addressing it again in another article. It is possible to read some information in later articles about why one chemist believes that doTERRA's peppermint mint smell this manner.

I shall add, however, the most crucial thing to me about the whole Difficulty was that I could never find solid info about WHY their peppermint smelled the manner that it did. |}

Report this ad

In one video, one of the creators of doTERRA said that their peppermint Smelled fantastic because it had been from Washington. {Well, other peppermints are from Washington. |}

Next, while researching the Entire thing, someone else in the company said It was since it had been distilled just from the leaves and the blossoms. I couldn't get a true response on it. I tried for weeks and months. It is a very disconcerting situation when I can't get answers to questions like this.

2. YLANG YLANG

DoTERRA prides itself on selling at the top of the line quality. |} Their an entire distillation. |} Some may say this is an issue of taste, but at the vital oils industry, the very first loaf of ylang ylang is more valued and consequently, a more costly oil. To their credit, doTERRA will call their ylang ylang a complete distill on their site.

Ylang Ylang first distill (which is Known as"additional") is generally Considered to be the quality of oil that's most sought after / of highest curative quality--maybe not the complete distillation.

3. TERRASHIELD {

Due to Kitchen Stewardship, I |} Realized that doTERRA doesn't disclose all the oils in this bug repellant blend. I will say that we have used this to cure after sting itching (along with my son likes it), but I believe not adding ingredients on a label is not preferable. (UPDATE -- doTERRA currently exposes the ingredients of their Terra Shield mix. I am happy they are doing this.)

What I believe is troubling here is that doTERRA Produces a Whole Lot of claims About their monies being the best--top quality. And their costs convinced reflect that. I do not believe I would buy whole, 2nd or 3rd distillation oil for more than other organizations are selling 1st distill for--do you?

UPDATE 4/16: I'm updating this distillation information.

Obviously, there are additional things to consider --purity, etc.. So we'll Keep the dialog going and touch on other companies too.

If not--request.

Thanks for your patience! |} It was a long road, but I promise, we |} Are nearing the finish.

4. FRANKINCENSE

This is not always a negative, but thought I should point out it because Frankincense is this a popular essential oil these days.

Most companies sell either just one number of Frankincense Oil, or several Varieties, but doTERRA's Frankincense is, at least as of this date I am writing this addition to this article (Aug 2016), a mix of different varieties (origin ):

-- carterii (generally the cheapest )
{-- serrata
-- frereana

5. |} No Organic Certification

One of the things that bugs me about doTERRA is They don't have some certified organic oils. What I have discovered is that it is too difficult for them to find that certificate from each one the countries they source from. Emily Wright states:

The cause of this is since we supply from numerous developing countries. The certificate requirements and accessibility differs from nation to nation. Some countries do not even have a certificate offering.

I do it. It can be difficult. But they can source a few or many of them Organically if they desired to. I see other companies doing this. Maybe I am wrong, but that's the way it seems to me. I've looked into natural certificate before and it was not as pricey as most companies (those without certificate ) make it out to be.

6. Country of Origin

As of this 2018 upgrade of this article, all or many of the oils from doTERRA do Not have a country of origin indicated on the site. This is interesting especially because the organization and/or its reps repeatedly say they can't get organic certification due to it being difficult to get it from the countries where their oils are sourced.

I heard from a reader that there is source map for doTERRA oils, but I could not find it. {I did locate one page that shows sourcing for Spikenard and Petitgrain. |} It demonstrates the Petitgrain Oil is derived from Paraguay. Other companies have organic Petitgrain from Paraguay so I would be interested in hearing where their other oils are out to see whether their claim about organic being something that they can't do would be reasonable or not.

Same Resource for Oils?

2018 Update: Here's something interesting that only came to my attention. Young alive and doTERRA appear to possess exactly the exact same source for a number of their own oils.

Examine these sources and see Bio Young Aromas is the provider To both companies.

https://www.seair.co.in/us-import/i-doterra.aspx

http://portexaminer.com/trade-data/bio-young-aromas-co-ltd-young-living-essentials-oils/banqsha5283692/

Not certain what to make of this.

Conclusion

There are some other things about these companies and I couldn't go into all Of them for a variety of reasons.

When I wrote this series, doTERRA'd very few oils if you were Looking for a company that could be a one stop shop, then it was not a really great option. That's changed somewhat since that time. |}

Both companies have a large command over the marketplace and there is a lot Of tension between the two. I believe it's hard to say which is best, and of course different facets of each business continue to change making them both sort of moving targets.

My goal here was not really to say which of these was greatest, but to Discuss Different facets of each of these"crucial oil powerhouses" in the midst of my search for the best essential oil business and point out a number of my worries with the two of them.

What do you believe?

Do you think you is Far Better than the other or do you rather not work with Either of them?
