Young Essential|}

Young Living or doTERRA?
This is only one of the big questions out there from the vital oils world.

It makes sense That Many of people are asking this question, since these Two companies possess a huge market share in the industry.

This post is just one in my search to find the "finest" Essential oils firm , and while it is somewhat off the beaten path, it is one I thought that I should write.

Admitting When You Are Wrong

Before we get into the comparison, Allow Me to say that I've had to admit I had been Wrong about things before. |}

-- My thinking that Lilla have been a waste of money (see my"I was wrong" Lilla Rose inspection ). |}
-- or stating my Organic Dishwasher Rinse Aid was a fantastic idea.

We need to be prepared to admit we were wrong.

When I began my trip using essential oils (that I never anticipated to Go on, by the way--I initially thought that essential oils turned into a scam), I moved with Young Living. Because it worked.

As time wore on, but I wasn't certain what to think.

Remember my passionate posts about their Thieves |} and Peppermint and Wintergreen?

I was pretty excited about the results I'd had, but as I began writing about Essential oils, I began having some second thoughts. In particular, one rep from doTERRA began pointing out some matters that had me rethinking my choice and wondering if I made the right choice or not.

And while I was doing my investigating, some different things popped up About both Young Living and doTERRA that made me think and wonder even more. About both companies.

It was difficult to sort through All the advice, but I will lay out Most of it for you so you can view some of the concerns that came to my attention. is not everything that I found to be disconcerting, but it is a good deal of it. |}

Now I will share what happened as I looked into the"heavy hitters" From the Essential Oils Industry--

If you've been searching into essential oils at all, Odds Are you have come across Young Living and doTERRA.

You have for sure heard"Young Living is the best!" |} Or even"doTERRA is your most Pure".

Or something like this.

I touched on some of these issues in the beginning of my Best Essential Oils series. But here is more.

Young Living Overview 1. Standing and Ethics -- |}{

First of all, Young Living was fairly much |} The very first on the cube. They literally made essential oils . There is something to be said for this. |}

However, there are some fairly not-so-savory things online about D. Gary Young. Obviously, the net can be filled with lies and truths. But I still think these things might be worth paying attention to. |} In fact, this info is a lot of what gave me pause when I initially was considering registering with YL. excellent for me personally, but I really didn't like what I had been studying. |}

Now, I do have my worries about Mr. Barrett--largely that he is basically an "anti-alternative treatment" hound. And I like alternative therapies. The majority of them, at the least.

I personally am very concerned about abuses in the alternative medical field. I am also concerned about abuses in Western medicine. |}

My Loved Ones and I have been harmed by the practices of Classic Western Medication (overuse of anti-biotics, over-use of prescriptions meds, physicians misdiagnosing acid reflux, etc.). |} Sometimes, we've been healed despitewhat mainstream doctors told us to perform.

understand there are abuses on both sides. |} But Quackwatch appears to be just Targeting everything alternative: Chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese medicine....You title it. |} If it's alternative, it is Barrett's goal.

I could go on and on about his site, but suffice it to say that I am not |} Sure of all Barrett's accusations from Gary Young. (UPDATE -- All of remarks by Mr. Barrett from Gary Young appear to have been removed so that I can't cite them no more.)

However, his writings concerning Young Living and Gary Young abandon something to ponder. Moreso in light of what else I found...

2. OSHA Violations --

I found this interesting entry referring to Young Living OSHA offenses . I didn't discover some by the other oils firms, although I didn't look all of of the vital oils firms up, of course. That would take a long long time and I couldn't find them for sure.

Now, Young Living is your oldest oils firm, so they've had longer time for There to be violations, and each the violations appear to be of the exact same incident.

Obviously, OSHA violations do not mean that a provider is bad. If they Cleaned up their procedures properly, then possibly their new procedures are better than ever before.

3. Non-Indigenous Plants --

Many A good amount (updated 4/2015) of Young Living's farms are located in the U.S. I feel that is fine for a company being more"in control" of the product, but not good if you follow traditional wisdom that plants grow best (and have the very best therapeutic qualities) when they are grown in their native locations (in which they are supposed to grow naturally).

If you browse through the comments of Best Essential Oils Parts 2 & 3, you'll notice that Young Living repetitions tout that YL farms are from the U.S. as being an edge --that it gives Young Living control over the entire procedure. Perhaps, but other businesses like doTERRA and most of the other firms I've looked into have their monies sourced from where the plants grow naturally for higher quality.

4. What Is That Smell? {

You know I like testing things before recommending them , like in myown: |}

Best {Cinnamon Sugar and
Best Eye Makeup Removerposts. |}

Then you won't be amazed to understand that people did so with essential Oils also.

I purchased Young Living, doTERRA, Mountain Rose Herbs, Aura Cacia, and two |} Other firms' oils and did a little"Smell Challenge" with my not-so-specially-trained Smell Testing Panel (a.k.a. my family). |}

5. Product Claims

{From the literature that I got from Young Living when I signed up, there were Thieves® brochures. |} The Booklet said this research done that apparently addressed the exceptional therapeutic value of the oil.

I hunted up the tests online to see what they were about, as I was Curious to observe the specific results and found, however, that the analysis was done on generic Eucalyptus Oil--maybe not to Thieves Oil.

Huh? So it seemed to me that the company was stating that it was proven That their Thieves® petroleum was proven to be effective, when what was the situation was that Eucalyptus, one element of Thieves®, was proven to be effective.

In a feeling, that's fine, I suppose. But I still was confused and decided to email headquarters.

This was their answer:

Publishers at 1-800-336-6308 or and Audio

oils and supplements and may have the ability to help you further. {

We needed a blind odor test of 3-5 brands of the identical oil.

In each instance, Young Living has been singled out as with a chemical (synthetic) overtone.

READ  Weighted Blanket For Restless Toddler

Does that mean there were synthetics additional?

Not necessarily of course, but we still didn't care for it.

6. Country of Origin

As of the 2018 upgrade of the post, all or many of the oils from Young Living don't have a state of origin indicated on the site.

DoTERRA Review {

Besides buying the Young Living Starter Kit, |} I also bought a large kit of doTERRA's oils to test them out from YL. I requested doTERRA reps and corporate workers heaps of queries, and that I even used their oils exclusively for awhile.

1 thing that I really like about doTERRA is their instructional resources -- {And also, their oils smell good. |}

But their great smell is part of what worries me.

1 thing I Truly don't care for is that a Good Deal of doTERRA reps (and Corporate employees too ) say something like,"You'll understand it works by its odor."

This from doTERRA's site:"A 100% pure therapeutic-grade |} Essential oil should have a balanced, broad fragrance profile and should smell crystal clear " |} I really don't know about you, but I do not understand what"crystal clear" means.

Before I go into more--I said distillation techniques in among my Previous articles. Basically, the going wisdom of essential oils is that you set the plant parts and water in a distiller and under reduced pressure and low temperatures, you distill the vital oils out of the plant.

traveling down a tube and into a vat--and the steam. |} The petroleum Collects on top of the water and can be removed and--voila--you have essential oils.

The most coveted, and most expensive (and thought to be the most Curative ) oil is that which can be collected during the first portion of the distillation interval. The resulting oil is called"first distilled."

This"first distillation" only applies to ylang ylang and maybe |} Peppermint, according to what I've learned. {

DoTERRA's peppermint scents |} great. |}

But that might be a problem. Here's why.

Most peppermint essential oils smell like the peppermint you find growing |} Outside in nature. Kind of herby rather than like a candy cane.

Candy-cane-smelling peppermint seems to be based on Several sources, possibly out of a redistill. The oils are either redistilled or some elements are taken out to give the oil a clean pepperminty candy odor. (Source).

The other choice is that someone did something else to the peppermint Petroleum to decrease the herby odor.

just what doTERRA's peppermint oils smell like. |} So yummy, In reality, that if you have kiddos in the house, you'd best keep it out of arm's reach.

Here's the answer I got from doTERRA stating that their peppermint oil is. {a "complete distill":

You can let her know that our Peppermint uses complete
distillation. There's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and complete and we utilize complete. |} Supply: my email.) |}

So if in Actuality, the very first distillation of peppermint oil is the most Valuable, then their peppermint oil might not be top quality.

If There's truly no such thing as more than one distillation of peppermint, As many say, then why is doTERRA stating that there is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and complete purification of peppermint? Maybe it was a mistake.

Please note, this entire topic Is Quite confusing and I'm digging into it More and am going to be adding more info for this series about it and/or addressing it again in another post. You can read some advice in later posts about why one chemist believes that doTERRA's peppermint mint smell this manner.

I will add, however, that the most disconcerting thing to me concerning the whole Issue was that I could never find good info regarding WHY their peppermint smelled the manner that it did. |}

Report this ad

In one video, one of the founders of doTERRA said that their peppermint Smelled amazing because it was from Washington. {Well, other peppermints are out of Washington. |}

Next, while researching the whole thing, someone else from the company said It was since it was distilled only from the leaves and the blossoms. I couldn't get a true answer on it. I tried for weeks and months. It is a very disconcerting situation when I can't get answers to questions like this.

DoTERRA prides itself on selling at the top of the line quality. |} Their Ylang ylang, however, is also a complete distillation. |} Some may say that this is an issue of taste, but in the vital oils sector, the first loaf of ylang ylang is more appreciated and therefore, a higher priced oil. To their credit, doTERRA will call their ylang ylang a complete distill on their site.

Ylang Ylang first distill (that can be Known as"extra") is generally Considered to be the quality of petroleum that is most sought after / of highest therapeutic quality--maybe not the complete distillation.

Due to Kitchen Stewardship, I |} Recognized that doTERRA does not disclose all the oils in this bug repellant blend. I'll say that we have used this to cure after sting itching (and my son enjoys it), however I believe that not adding ingredients on a label isn't preferable. (UPDATE -- doTERRA currently exposes the components of the Terra Shield mix. I'm glad they are doing this.)

What I believe is troubling is that doTERRA makes a Whole Lot of claims About their monies being the best--top quality. And their costs convinced reflect that. I do not believe I would buy whole, 2nd or even 3rd distillation oil for more than other organizations are selling 1st distill for--do you?

UPDATE 4/16: I will be updating this distillation information.

Obviously, there are additional things to think about--purity, etc.. So we will Keep the dialog going and touch on different companies as well.

If not--request.

Thanks for your patience! |} It was a long road, but I promise, we |} Are nearing the finish.

This isn't necessarily a drawback, but thought I should point it out since Frankincense is such a favorite essential oil these days.

Most firms sell either just one variety of Frankincense Oil, or even several Varieties, however doTERRA's Frankincense is, at least as of the date I'm writing this addition to this post (Aug 2016), a mix of different varieties (source):

-- carterii (generally the least expensive)
{-- serrata
-- frereana

5. |} No Organic Certification

One of the things that bugs me about doTERRA is They don't have any What I have discovered is that it is too difficult for them to find that certificate from each one the countries that they source from. Emily Wright says:

The cause of this is since we supply from numerous developing nations. The certificate requirements and accessibility differs from country to country. Some countries do not even have a certificate offering.

I get it. It can be difficult. However they could source some or many of these Organically if they desired to. I find other companies doing it. Maybe I'm wrong, but that is the way it seems to me. I've looked into natural certificate before and it wasn't as pricey as most companies (those without certification) make it out to be.

6. Country of Origin

As of the 2018 upgrade of the post, all or many of the oils out of doTERRA do Not have a state of origin indicated on the site. This can be interesting especially since the company and/or its reps repeatedly say that they can't find organic certification because of it being difficult to get it from the countries where their monies are sourced.

I heard from a reader That There's source map to get doTERRA oils, however I couldn't find it. {I did find one page that reveals sourcing for Spikenard and Petitgrain. |} It shows that the Petitgrain Oil is derived from Paraguay. Other firms have organic Petitgrain out of Paraguay so I would be interested in hearing where their other oils are out to see if their claim about natural being something that they can't do is not.

Same Source for Oils?

2018 Update: Here is something interesting that just came to my attention. Young Living and doTERRA appear to possess exactly the same source for a number of their own oils.

Look at these sources and see that Bio Young Aromas is your supplier To both companies.

Not certain what to make of the.

There are some other things about these firms and I couldn't go into all Of them for a variety of reasons.

When I wrote this particular series, doTERRA had very few oils if you had been Looking for a company that could be a one stop shop, then it wasn't a really fantastic option. That has changed somewhat since that time. |}

Both companies have a big command over the marketplace and There's a lot Of tension between the two. I believe it's hard to say which is best, and of course different facets of each company continue to alter making them both kind of moving targets.

My goal here wasn't to say that of these was best, but to Discuss Different facets of each of these"crucial oil powerhouses" in the middle of my search for the most effective essential oil company and point out a number of my concerns with the two of them.

What do you believe?

Do you think one is Far Better than the other or do you rather not work with Either of them?
