Young Essential|} Oil Products : Young Living or doTERRA ?

Young Living or doTERRA?
This is only one of those big questions out there in the essential oils planet.

It makes sense That Many of people are asking this question, since those Two companies possess a massive market share in the industry.

This post is one in my hunt to find the "finest" Essential oils firm , and while it is a bit off the beaten path, it is one I thought I should write.

Admitting when You're Mistaken

Before we get into the comparison, let me say that I have had to admit I had been Wrong about things before. |}

-- My thinking which Lilla Rose Flexi Clips were a waste of money (see my"I was wrong" Lilla Rose review). |}
-- or saying my Organic Dishwasher Rinse Aid proved to be a fantastic idea.

We need to be prepared to admit we were wrong.

When I began my trip with essential oils (which I never anticipated to Proceed, by the way--I originally thought that essential oils were a scam), I went with Young Living. Since it worked.

As time wore on, but I was not certain what to think.

{

Remember my passionate posts about their Thieves |}

I was pretty excited about the results I had, but since I started writing about Essential oils, I started having some second thoughts. In particular, one rep from doTERRA started pointing out some things that had me rethinking my choice and wondering when I made the right choice or not.

And while I was doing my investigating, some different things surfaced up About both Youthful Living and doTERRA which made me think and wonder even more. About both companies.

It was hard to sort through all of the information, but I'm going to lay out Most of it for you so you can view some of the concerns which came into my attention. This isn't everything that I found to be disconcerting, but it is a lot of it. |}

If you have been looking into essential oils in Any Way, Odds Are you have come

You've for sure heard"Young Living is the best!" |} Or"doTERRA is your most Pure".

Or something like that.

I touched on some of these issues in the Start of my Best Essential Oils series. But here is more.

Young Living Review 1. Reputation and Ethics -- |}{

First of all, Young Living was pretty much |} The first on the cube. They made essential oils mainstream. There's something to be said for that. |}

However, there are a number of pretty not-so-savory items on the internet about D. Gary Young. Of course, the internet can be full of lies and truths. But I still think these things may be worth paying attention to. |} Dr. Stephen Barrett has written a load of unsavory things about D. Gary Young. In fact, this info is a lot of what gave me pause when I originally was considering signing up with YL. excellent for me personally, but I actually did not enjoy what I had been studying. |}

READ  Anxiety Relief Products

Now, I really do have my worries about Mr. Barrett--mainly that he's essentially an "anti-alternative treatment" hound. And I enjoy alternative therapies. The majority of them, at least.

I personally am very worried about abuses in the alternative medical field. But I'm also worried about abuses in Western medicine. |}

My family and I have been hurt by the practices of Classic Western Medicine (overuse of anti-biotics, over-use of prescriptions meds, doctors misdiagnosing acid reflux, etc.). |} In some cases, we have been cured regardless of what mainstream doctors told us to perform.

I know that there are abuses on both sides. |} However, Quackwatch seems to be just Targeting everything alternative: Chiropractic, acupuncture, Chinese medicine....You name it. |} If it's alternative, it is Barrett's goal.

{

I could go on and on about his Website, but suffice it to say That I'm not |} Sure of all of Barrett's accusations against Gary Young. (UPDATE -- All remarks by Mr. Barrett against Gary Young seem to have been eliminated so I can not mention them any longer.)

However, his writings about Young alive and Gary Young leave something to ponder. Moreso in light of everything else I found...

2.

I found this interesting entry referring to Young Living OSHA violations. I didn't discover any by the other oils companies, although I did not look all of those essential oils companies up, needless to say. This would take a very long time and I could not find them for sure.

Now, Young Living is your oldest oils firm, so they've had longer time for There to be offenses, and all of the offenses seem to be of the exact same incident.

Of course, OSHA violations do not mean a provider is bad. If they Cleaned up their procedures properly, then their new procedures are better than ever.

3.

Many A good amount (upgraded 4/2015) of Young Living's farms are located in the U.S. I feel that is fine for a business being more"in control" of their product, but not great if you follow traditional wisdom that crops grow best (and have the best therapeutic qualities) if they're grown in their indigenous locations (in which they're supposed to grow naturally).

If you read through the comments of Best Essential Oils Parts 2 & 3, you will see that Young Living reps tout that YL farms are in the U.S. as being an edge --that it provides Young alive control over the whole procedure. Maybe, but other businesses like doTERRA and the majority of the other companies I have looked to have their monies sourced from where the crops grow naturally for higher quality.

4. What's That Smell? {

You know I like testing things before recommending them , like in my:|}

Best {Cinnamon Sugar and
Best Eye Makeup Removerposts. |}

You then won't be surprised to know that people did so with essential Oils also.

{

I purchased Young Living, doTERRA, Mountain Rose Herbs, Aura Cacia, and two |} Other companies' oils and did a little"Smell Challenge" with my not-so-specially-trained Smell Testing Panel (a.k.a. my family). |}

5. Product Claims

{In the literature which I obtained from Young alive when I signed up, there were Thieves® brochures. |} The Booklet said this research done that seemingly addressed the superior therapeutic value of this oil.

I hunted up the tests on the Internet to see what they were about, as I was Curious to see the exact effects and found, however, the study was performed on generic Eucalyptus Oil--not to Thieves Oil.

Huh? So it appeared to me the company was saying that it was proven Their Thieves® petroleum was proven to work, when what really was the case was that Eucalyptus, one component of Thieves®, was proven to work.

In a feeling, that is fine, I guess. However, I still was confused and chose to email headquarters.

This was their answer:

THE SMELL CHALLENGE: |}

We needed a blind smell test of 3-5 brands of the same oil.

In each case, Young Living was singled out as having a chemical (synthetic) overtone.

Does that mean that there were synthetics added?

Not necessarily of course, but we still didn't care for it.

6. Country of Origin

As of this 2018 update of this post, all or Lots of the oils from Young Living do not have a state of source indicated on the website.

DoTERRA Inspection {

Apart from buying the Young Living Starter Kit, |} I also bought a big kit of doTERRA's oils to test them out against YL. I requested doTERRA repetitions and corporate workers tons of queries, and I used their oils solely for awhile.

1 thing I really enjoy about doTERRA is their educational resources -- {And also, their oils smell great. |}

However, their great smell is part of what worries me.

1 thing I Truly don't care for is that a lot of doTERRA repetitions (and Corporate employees as well) say something like,"You'll know it works by its own smell."

{

This from doTERRA's site:"A 100% pure therapeutic-grade |} needs to have a balanced, broad fragrance profile and ought to smell crystal clear ." |} I don't know about you, but I do not know what"crystal clear" means.

Before I go into more--I mentioned distillation techniques in one of my Previous articles. Basically, the going wisdom about essential oils is that you put the plant parts and water in a distiller and under low pressure and low temperatures, you distill the essential oils out of the plant.

They travel down a tube and into a vat--along with the steam. |} The petroleum Collects along with the water and is eliminated and--voila--you've got essential oils.

The most enviable, and many expensive (and regarded as the most Curative ) oil is what is accumulated during the first portion of the distillation interval. The resulting oil is called"first dried."

{

This"first distillation" just applies to ylang ylang and possibly |} Peppermint, based on what I have learned. {

1. |} PEPPERMINT {

DoTERRA's peppermint smells |} Good enough to eat--as in"candy cane" good. |}

But that may be a problem. Here's why.

{

Most peppermint essential oils smell like the peppermint you find growing |} Out in nature. Kind of herby rather than really like a candy cane.

Candy-cane-smelling peppermint seems to be according to Several sources, maybe out of a redistill. The oils are either redistilled or some elements are taken out to give the oil a clean pepperminty candy smell. (Source).

The other alternative is that somebody did something else into the peppermint Petroleum to reduce the herby smell.

just what doTERRA's peppermint oils smell like. |} So yummy, In fact, that if you have kiddos in the home, you'd best keep it out of arm's reach.

Here's the answer I got from doTERRA saying that their olive oil is. {a "complete distill":

|}

You can let her know our Peppermint utilizes complete
distillation. There's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and finish and we use complete. |} Supply: my email.) |}

So if in Actuality, the first distillation of peppermint oil would be the most Valuable, then their olive oil may not be high quality.

If there is truly no such thing as more than one distillation of peppermint, As many say, then why is doTERRA saying there is a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and total purification of peppermint? Possibly it was a mistake.

Please note, this whole subject Is Quite confusing and I'm digging into it More and will be adding more info to this series about it or addressing it again in another post. You can read some information in later posts about why one chemist believes that doTERRA's peppermint mint smell this way.

I shall add, however, the most crucial thing to me about the whole Issue was that I could never find good info regarding WHY their peppermint smelled the way that it did. |}

Report this ad

In one video, one of the founders of doTERRA said that their peppermint Smelled fantastic because it was from Washington. {Well, other peppermints are out of Washington. |}

Then, while researching the Entire thing, somebody else in the company said That it was since it was distilled just from the leaves and the blossoms. I could not get a true response on it. I tried for months and months. It's a very disconcerting situation when I can not get answers to questions such as this.

2.

DoTERRA prides itself on selling the top of the line quality. |} Their Ylang ylang, however, is also a complete distillation. |} Some can say this is an issue of taste, but in the essential oils sector, the first loaf of ylang ylang is more appreciated and therefore, a more costly oil. To their credit, doTERRA does phone their ylang ylang an entire distill on their site.

Ylang Ylang first distill (which is referred to as"additional") is typically Considered to be the quality of petroleum that is most sought after / of highest therapeutic quality--not the comprehensive distillation.

3. TERRASHIELD {

Thanks to Kitchen Stewardship, I |} Realized that doTERRA does not disclose all of the oils within this bug repellant blend. I'll say that we have used this to treat after sting itching (along with my son likes it), but I believe not including ingredients on a tag isn't preferable. (UPDATE -- doTERRA now discloses the ingredients of their Terra Shield blend. I am happy they're doing that.)

What I believe is troubling is that doTERRA Produces a lot of claims About their monies being the best--high quality. And their prices convinced reflect that. I do not believe I would buy whole, 2nd or 3rd distillation oil for more than other organizations are selling 1st distill for--do you?

UPDATE 4/16: I'm upgrading this distillation information.

Of course, there are other things to think about--purity, etc.. So we'll Keep the conversation going and touch on other companies as well.

I hope this all makes sense. If not--request.

Thanks for your patience! |} It has been a long road, but I promise, we |} Are nearing the end.

4. FRANKINCENSE

This isn't necessarily a drawback, but thought I should point out it because Frankincense is this a popular essential oil these days.

Most companies sell either just one variety of Frankincense Oil, or several Varieties, but doTERRA's Frankincense is, at least as of this date I'm writing this addition to this post (Aug 2016), a blend of different kinds (origin ):

-- carterii (generally the cheapest )
{-- serrata
-- frereana

5. |} No Organic Certification

One of the Things Which bugs me about doTERRA is that they don't have some certified organic oils. What I have heard is that it is too hard for them to find that certification from each one of the countries they source from. Emily Wright says:

The cause of this is since we source from numerous developing countries. The certification requirements and accessibility differs from country to country. Some countries do not even have a certification offering.

I get it. It can be hard. However they could source some or many of these Organically if they wanted to. I see other companies doing it. Perhaps I am incorrect, but that is the way it seems to me. I have looked into organic certification before and it was not as expensive as most companies (those without certificate ) make it out to be.

6. Country of Origin

As of this 2018 update of this post, all or Lots of the oils out of doTERRA do Not have a state of source indicated on the website. This is interesting especially since the organization and/or its representatives repeatedly say they can not find organic certification because of it being hard to get it in the countries where their oils are sourced.

I heard from a reader that there is source map to get doTERRA oils, but I couldn't find it. {I did find one page that reveals sourcing for Spikenard and Petitgrain. |} It demonstrates the Petitgrain Oil is derived from Paraguay. Other companies have organic Petitgrain out of Paraguay so I would be interested in hearing where their oils are out to see if their claim about organic being something that they can not do would be not.

Same Resource for Oils?

2018 Update: Here is something interesting that only came into my attention. Young alive and doTERRA seem to possess exactly the same source for a number of their oils.

Look at these sources and see Bio Young Aromas is your provider To both companies.

https://www.seair.co.in/us-import/i-doterra.aspx

http://portexaminer.com/trade-data/bio-young-aromas-co-ltd-young-living-essentials-oils/banqsha5283692/

Not certain what to make of this.

Conclusion

There are some other things about these companies and I could not go into all Of them for various reasons.

When I first wrote this series, doTERRA'd Hardly Any oils so if you had been Looking for a business which could be a one stop shop, then it was not really a fantastic alternative. That's changed somewhat since that time. |}

Both companies have a large command over the Market and there is a lot Of tension between the two. I believe that it's difficult to say which is best, and of course different aspects of each business continue to change which makes them both sort of moving goals.

My goal here was not really to say which of these was greatest, but to Discuss Different aspects of each of these"crucial oil powerhouses" in the middle of my hunt for the most effective essential oil business and point out a number of my worries with both of them.

What do you believe?

Do you think one is Far Better than the other or do you rather not work with Either of them?
